Do you measure distance in time?

It has been brought to my attention that some people are _not_ using time to indicate distance. This comes as a shock to me, as I assumed everyone did it this way.

Explanation: "How far away is your house from here?" "Oh, about ten, fifteen minutes."

"Do you live very far from your folks?" "Nah, they're only about an hour and a half south from here."

Do people actually use units of distance to indicate distance? Weird.

Your assumption is off by a mile.

It's a more practical way of relating distance although not technically accurate.

I do it all the time. The only time that I used the actual distance is when it is really far. Like if you asked me how far it was from Toronto to Vancouver I would say about 3500-4000 km. But if you asked me how far it was from my place to the mall, I would say 30 minutes.

Kilometers? Sounds almost as confusing as that damned Celsius scale. How warm is 10 degrees C? Hell if I know. Now 50 degrees F - that I can wrap my head around.

How hard is it to learn both? Not that hard at all. Also, it make a lot more sense for water to freeze at 0 and boil at 100, rather than freeze at 32 and boil at 212.

I think time is a far better way to measure distance. It doesn't really matter how far away somewhere is, what matters is how long it takes you to get there. 15 minutes to work, 10 minutes to Target, a little over an hour to grandma's, 9 hours to Maui, etc.

I'm just yankin your chain; I'm actually quite familiar with the metric system. We use it at work more than we do English units. Celsius makes a heck of a lot more sense than Fahrenheit, though I still have a better idea in my mind of what x degrees F feels like as opposed to C. I think we're one of only two or three countries that hasn't adopted the metric system. Someday we'll learn.

Much more practical, IMO. I'm only 3 miles from work but it's much more useful if I tell people it's about 20 minutes which it always is because of traffic.

It's all relative to how fast someone drives and traffic, it seems--so I guess time is a better standard.

I do neither.

I measure distance in songs.

"He's about Raining Blood from here."

"That store'll take A Change of Seasons if we leave now, or rush hour traffic will turn it into 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence."

"Oh it's a road trip alright, it's three power metal albums from here."

Although the freezing and boiling points of water may make sense, on a day to day usage, I don't like how a few degrees in Celsius is the difference between freezing your butt off and wearing shorts. Fahrenheit is much better, and I say that as a proud American!

As for distance, I do actually measure it in time. Unless it's something very close, then I'll use miles. For example, my high school is half an hour from my house, but a George's Music is like eight miles from here.

If I turn up to relativity classes I measure distances in light-time.
