Do You Presume The Level Of Musical Talent Of Other TBers Based On Their Posts?

Sign in to disble this ad
I personally don't. I'll often presume their intelligence, experience, and sometime education if their spelling/grammar is bad enough , but not their musical skill unless they post about how good they are.

I bring it up because I received a very interesting YouTube comment today. This was it:
"this is not very good. i thought you would be better based on your TB postings. "living proof that more strings..... " cmon bro, you got 6 strings right there."

I'm fine with critique as well as people flat-out not liking my playing or music, but I found it very strange that he'd assume I was better based on my postings. I also found it odd because most people who read my posts would've seen the many times that I've mentioned that I'm a self-taught, non-gigging, mediocre hobbyist bassist, not to mention my user title states that I'm living proof that using more strings doesn't you have talent.... Makes me wonder if I'm putting something in my posts that I'm not aware of.

EDIT:
No, I presume you all suck until I get to listen to you. Then I confirm that you do indeed suck.
It's very good for my fragile ego.

Okay, here's my original post.
No, not at all.

One thing I found early on and not here at TB is that product knowledge, a good grasp on music theory, technique, etc. and the ability to verbally articulate such subjects well has noting to do with talent.

Listen to this man.

Bryan, I wouldn't take what that poster said to heart. Your style of playing is very different than the "average" bass player, but I have always enjoyed your videos and have found you to be one of the top players on the forums based on clips and videos. The guy is just a jerk.

I might add that I rarely really consider how good a player might be when I'm reading their posts. If they mention it (like Bryan has/does), I usually take their word for it.

I think your first sentence covered it quite well.

I assume you're a Greg Stillson-like character- a charismatic politician-in-training who will ultimately destroy the world.

Thanks- I'm not taking what he said to heart- I'd have preferred his criticism be more specific in fact as I do enjoy good criticism as it makes me better. It just made me think that it's possible that a lot of TBers make qualifiers about musical talent from posts. I've often seen someone post a negative/controversial opinion about something and then have their opinion be taken as evidence that their musical talent is lacking.

Wow I never viewed any of your videos before, I'm glad I have now.
Stop belittling yourself Bryan, that was wonderful stuff, very imaginative looping work too. Man if I had listened to your own comments and others, I would have expected much less.
F the haters, I never pay attention to comments especially when they have none of their own playing showing to the world, chicken sheite trolls.
Your posts for me now more than equal your playing, so there.
Cheers,
Dirk

I always thought your sig referred to guitards.

Seriously, I make no assumptions about anyone's talent or skill level, because I have been surprised a few times by how good some TBers are. And sometimes the players who really talk themselves up leave a little to be desired when you finally do get to hear them.

In the end, it doesn't matter, I don't come to TB to see how we stack up against each other. Sometimes the most humble and rudimentary players have some of the best advice on things like gear, gigs, mods and technical tips. etc.

I'm the first to admit that I'm pretty judgmental. But frankly, some of the best guitarists and bassists that I know personally are outright idiots. I judge intelligence by posts most anywhere, especially grammar and mechanics. I don't, however, judge talent thereby.
