Who here is in to Roller Derby? Does anybody else on TB love chicks on skates knocking each other down?

view albums: ACDG v BADG, battle for the Coast, RollerCon 08, sirens v fight crew.

Google image search is reasonably effective, as well.

One of my friends does it. I go watch her every once in a while, and it's pretty fun to watch.

Speed skating during the Winter Olympics can be, if not more violent than roller derby.

In 2006, I remember a Chinese guy so desperate to make to to the finals that he created a pile-up of all four skaters. It's amazing how much chaos 4 guys skating counter-clockwise can cause.

When you put it that way, I'm gonna have to watch some Olympic speed skating.

Still, I question the possibility of "more violent." In roller derby, only two of the 10 girls on the track are racing, the other eight "blockers" spend their time knocking skaters down, or out of position.

Modern derby, has lots of hard hits, penalties, ejections, and injuries, but none of the WWE style, play-acting, that the previously young, may remember from TV. OK, there's a league or two which allow some fake fighting, but they represent a statistically insignificant portion of modern derby, and I wouldn't work with them, even if they were close by.

I'm aiming to try out for the Windy City Rollers next summer. Currently I take skating and speed skating classes and volunteer for the league (help set up/tear down, load gear, etc. on bout days). There's also a recreational derby league that I've skated with a couple times, and I'll join when they open up membership in the fall.
