Do you share CDs with your Life Partner?

I believe that stealing music is wrong, and that as someone in the music business I need to treat other musicians the way I want to be treated. That means buying their songs legally.

That being said, what do you think of sharing songs with your life partner? I'm not talking just a girlfriend or boyfriend but someone you live with where your stuff is their stuff and vice versa. If one buys a CD, is it ethical for both of you to put it on your iPod? Or should you each buy a copy since you are putting it on two iPods?

I can see that in the past if one bought a CD you could share that one CD and that would be ethical. But each of you putting it on your iPod poses an ethical dilemma.

Just curious about opinions, not looking for a flame war on whether stealing music in general is wrong.

i think it's ok, i mean you the situation you're describing generally suggest you're living in the same place and that would mean buying 2 of everything would be impractical, including CDs.

to me, putting songs on 2 ipods in this situation is just like putting a CD on the stereo and having 2 people listen.

If there weren't mp3 players, I don't think I'd purchase the CD if my life partner had already bought it. So I guess it's not much of a difference if we both have it on our iPods.

I think you answered your question here, I see no ethical dilemmas at all.

Remember back in the day, dude A had a cd, dude B wanted a copy, dude A makes a tape (take that Lars).... tape vs ipod, only difference is song capacity!

bands dont make very much at all on CD sales, shows, merch etc pays the bills. so go buy your own Jonas Brothers T-Shirt!

not an issue in my opinion

edit: in a perfect world, yes, everybody should buy their own copy to support the artist... but imagine this, drummer not being a life partner, asks to download your new Neil Diamond cd cus your band wants to cover the whole EP... will you say to him... "um dude, its not ethical, your gonna have to buy your own copy!"........................the can of worms are offically open!

Seeing as my Wife & I pool our finances together, file our taxes jointly, and general possesions are "ours", it's OUR cd to do as we see fit. No dilema, ethical, legal or otherwise.

All our CD's are easily accessible to each other.
She does listen to some things that escape me but it works the other way around too.
Respect for each others tastes and the things that each bring to the relationship.

My wife and I listen to different styles of music. Although she'll take over one of my CD's if she likes it.

The same goes for ipods/mp3 players. She has her likes, and I have mine.

As far as an ethical problem.... I don't see there to be one. If you are both equal in the household (ie. share everything), then both persons using the same songs/CD's (even if only bought once) it's not a legal problem.

It's a problem if a person purchases a CD/song, then gives it everyone to copy. This is why Napster had so much trouble .... it allowed users to "share" songs with other users, without the artists getting a cut/royalties for their songs.
