Question Do You Think Humans Will Reach Another Solar System In Our Lifetimes?

Sign in to disble this ad
since "lifetime" is a pretty ambiguous time constraint, I'll say... in the next 60 years or so.

Whaddaya think, will we make it to Alpha Centauri (or anywhere else) in that time?

I'm not really sure. While there has been an amazing boom in technology in the past 3 decades, almost all of it has been in personal computing power. There haven't been any real breakthroughs in space travel or anything like that. We still rely on rocket engines (and to a lesser extent, ion engines) to power our space-faring vehicles, and unless we find something MUCH faster, I don't see us making it.

No, we will not. Because even traveling at the speed of light, it would take 5 years to get there and I do not think that we will EVER come close to traveling that fast.

I read an article the other day about the space shuttle using a 5kb chip. Its from the eighties and super simple as to not cause much trouble. The russians upgraded a few years ago to a high tech model and then had to dump their shuttle in the ocean. Too much stuff to go wrong I guess.
My thought is we will not get to another solar system. I think the travel time will take more than 60 years. I think it takes 20-30 years just to get out of our system.
I'd say a larger space station and a moon or mars colony will happen in the next 60 years. But it will most likely be made up of scientists and such. Space tours are very likely. Maybe like a cruise around the moon or something like that.

Aside from the speed of the craft we can achieve, I don't think that NASA is going to send anyone farther than the moon without doing EXHAUSTIVE research about how the human body reacts to extended time in space/on the moon.

Not in our lifetimes, not in any human lifetime. The physics won't allow it.

One of the most fun aspects of "light-speed travel" is that it would take an infinite amount of energy to get up to light speed. And then, what most people overlook is that it would take exactly as much energy (and time) on the other end to *slow down* again! You can't just hit the brakes in space.

Nope. We'll destroy ourselves first.

Not a chance it will happen within the next 60 years or anytime even close to that.

Comparing humans making a trip to the moon and back with humans making a trip to a nearby star and back is the equivalent of comparing making a trip out your front door to to the mailbox and back with making a trip to the moon and back.

I think the fact that we're not regularly visited by aliens is a pretty good indicator that interstellar travel is pretty much ruled out for all sorts of reasons, regardless of how advanced technology can become.

No, of course not.
Do you?
Alpha Centauri is 4.37 light years away.
I doubt humans will walk on Mars in that timeframe. The physiological and technical challenges of THAT are immense. It's certainly possible but the chance of disaster is much larger than the moon landings.

I'm just waiting for Steve Jobs to create the iShuttle to send us all into space... For $399.99. It'll happen. It will!
