I tip often, I always tip and I base my tip on how well the service was. However if I go into a place and tell them what I want , they make it and hand it to me to carry out no I dont tip them. If I were to tip them then I would have to tip people at Burger King and other fastfood places.

My daughter is a hairstylist and receives tips in addition to wages and commissions on product sales.
Because a lot of those jobs do not pay at least minimum wage as a way of offsetting overhead for the owners (of course, the owners are still on the hook for minimum wage under FLSA if tips do not equal at least minimum wage, but they're betting on enough tips so they don't have to pay the remainder of wages out of pocket). I've never been in the restaurant business, but from what I understand, it's a high overhead, low margin industry. If wait staff only recieved a wage, our food would be much more expensive.

I always tip my hairstylist. They don't own the shop and they get paid percentage of each haircut rather than an hourly wage. So if it's a slow day, they're not making much on volume (so they have to make up for it on unit).

I don't tip when picking up an order...except for that rare occasion when the person giving me my food gives some extra form of service. I've had a few times when someone told me "Next time you should try this, no one really knows about it but it's really good," or a "you want me to throw a few extra _____'s in for you?" or a "on Thursdays these things will be on sale"

+1

Theres a mexican food place around the corner from where I live called "Gringos Tacos" and its run by this older Paula Dean looking lady. Every time I go in there, either alone or with my girlfriend, the lady starts making our food as if she were our mother. "Do you want some _____ with that?" "How about I throw in some extra _____?" I may leave her a tip when I carryout, just because she goes above and beyond.

Thanks for your response; however, that only answered part of the question. Who determined that certain jobs warranted a tip? (e.g.) Why does a taxi driver warrant a tip but the public bus driver or a train engineer does not? Why does the bellhop warrant a tip but the hotel desk clerk does not? And so on.

Curious minds want to know.

A pet peeve of mine is when I see people who go to a buffet chain restaurant such as Ryan's, Ponderosa, Golden Corral, etc. and they are served their drinks by a waitress or waiter, who also clears away the dishes after every visit to the buffet but they don't tip these people. I have heard people say that they got their own food and should not have to tip them. I always tip them because they are there to wait on the customers. I have seen many times where the servers will get food from the buffet or kitchen for patrons who are disabled, small children, or just to go the extra mile and yet they get treated differently than serves at other restaurants. That is not right.

I usually tip for carry out but not at the usual 15-20 percent. Like others I might throw a dollar. I usually leave my change in the jar for a good barrista.

I'm not going to pay for a service I didn't receive (I know the waiters are working for tips, but it's not charity, and I didn't take any of them to raise ). So no, I don't tip for take out. I tip 20 percent for dine in generally, and I am very nice to the servers.

I doubt they attempt to roll a new set of receipts in just for take-out.

They are using dine-in receipts. The guy probably laughed at you.

If I pay cash, I'll give them my coins ... if there is a tip line for credit card, I'll throw a buck or two. If you are rude, however, FORGET it.

I tip generously to wait staff and delivery persons. That's what the tip is for, service, not preparation. The preparation part of the meal is already covered in the price. That's the way I see it. If I drive there and pick up the food myself, I tip myself.

I never tip for carryout, though I did have a chinese place give me the dirtiest look when I didn't leave one.

I always tip for delivery, usually about $5 depending on how much it is. The tip goes down depending on the delivery person and how they handle the delivery. We have a few places where the delivery person won't walk to the end of the building after we buzz them in. They act like they didn't know they were being buzzed in even though we told them, and you can hear the door click loudly.

Me with edit. NEVER for take out. In the rare instance that I get tea at Starbucker I do not tip. At restaurants I'm usually a 25% tipper. This xmas I dropped $100 on a $28 tab as the girl seemed a bit stressed. She ran out to the parking lot to hug me, in tears. Worth every penny.

I tip for most places, but not take-out or places where I have to clean up my own mess.

Except this Mexican place in town. The guy that runs the place is awesome and very kind. Hes generally running the register. There's a slot on the receipt for a tip, but I throw cash in the jar instead so that they don't have to pay taxes on it. And the food is freaking amazing (and in huge portions) for such a low price.

I don't know for sure, but I'm going to take an educated guess and say it most likely evolved throughout the years as a result of economic pressures that were felt throughout those industries. My guess is it's something that probably couldn't be cleanly answered in a few sentences but may be better investigated through some sociology student's dissertation.

I do not tip at most places where it's somebody behind a counter serving me. The exception being pubs and coffees.

I don't tip for take out, but if they have a tip jar, they get all my metal change.

I tip accordiong to service. I was a waiter for a bit in college and I worked very hard to make sure my customers were taken care of because I wanted a nice tip. Somewhere between college and now, I owned a small coffee shop and most days I worked the register. I put a tip jar by the register because people will throw money in it if it's there. But me as a customer? It all comes down to service. I've tipped baristas, fast food workers, take out places, delivery people, hairstylists, bell hops, concierges, door men, postal workers, waiters/waitresses, etc. And I've also stiffed all of the above. I don't tip automatically because I'm ina restaurant and someone is bringing me my food. I've been in restaurants where the service was outstanding and I've left very generous tips. I've also been in places where the service was awful; recently my wife and I went to a place for dinner. We waited a very long time for the server to arrive (they were busy but not that busy). She arrived, no greeting, no "welcome to ____"...nothing. She dropped our menus on the table, said nothing, and walked away. She returned about 20 minutes later and asked if we were ready to order. We placed our orders and off she went. She literally said nothing other than, "are you ready to order?"
ANother 20-30 minutes, she arrives at our table with our plates and drinks (we didn't get our drinks first).
She puts our drinks on the table, drops our plates and quickly runs away...completely ignoring my wife saying "excuse me...miss???"

She didn't bring us any silverware. I hadn't noticed since I ordered a sandwich. My wife called her back but she ignored us.
We sat for a few minutes and my wife couldn't eat because she had no silverware. We both tried to get someone's attention but we were ignored. So I had to walk to the kitchen area and ask for silverware. The lackluster employee didn't say a word but only pointed to the silverware.
We didn't see our waitress again-anywhere in the restaurant, until she walked by and dropped the check on the table. She didn't ask if we needed anything else, she didn't ask if we wanted dessert, she didn't ask if everything was ok, she didn't say a word. Just dropped the check on the table and kept walking.
I left her a big fat $0 as a tip. My wife said that might have been a little harsh and maybe I should have left something. But as I said; I don't tip automatically. I don't expect to be served like a king. But I expect a little effort if you want my very hard earned money. And for great service, I don't mind leaving a tip that's larger than the actual bill or at least close to the total bill.
The wife and I were in Philly a couple months ago. Stopped at a diner for and early dinner. The waitress was very friendly-called us honey and sweetie and like that. Brought our drinks out right away, brought bread for us to eat before our meals. Made sure our drinks were topped off. Checked on us regularly. Asked how the food was and if we needed anything else. Asked if we wanted to go boxes when we didn't finish our meals. Very attentive and very friendly. An older lady-reminded me of someone's sweet mother or grandmother.
On a $30 tab, I left her a $20 tip. Sure she won't retire from my $20 but that a nice tip. And she deserved it.
But for crap service, I have no problem leaving nothing.

Something I have noticed at quite a few restaurants lately is that the wait staff do not seem to be trained properly. So, I can't always blame the server for how things go but it's not that hard to figure out what to do. One thing that drives me crazy is when as soon as I sit down, the server asks if I know what I want or are ready to order. Heck, I did not see a menu yet. At many fast food places, someone yells at you as soon as you walk in and asks if you are ready to order before the door closes behind you.

On a positive note. Many restaurant servers deal with a tough job and nasty customers daily. It is not hard to be kind, courteous, polite, and lighthearted with the servers. Believe me that you will get great service when you are the great customer. Every time a server brings me something - menu, drinks, my meal, etc. I say thank you and that goes a long way to just be polite. Smile. Call the server by name if you know it and don't yell, "Hey you!" Light joking as if they call me honey, I will say, "How did you know my name was honey?" or if they say "My name is ______ and I will be your server today and I reply with my name is _______ and I will be your customer today." A little positive interaction results in a positive dining experience.

This is starting to remind me of Reservoir Dogs

If I'm in a restaurant and I'm standing up when I place my order, I don't tip. Simple as that. I'm a generous tipper when it's warranted, but if I come to you to order and pick it up, I won't tip. Though I suppose there are some rare exceptions that have been mentioned above...

People who tip for carry out bring to mind the old saying. About "a fool and his money are soon parted"

I never tip for carry out!
