Do you watch or play violent media around younger children?

I was just curious how many TB'ers watched R rated movies, programs like CSI, or played violent games like Grand Theft Auto and Manhunt around minor children.

I am a firm believer in not doing so and base my movie and game choices around that for anything that will be played or viewed around the kids.

The major argument I have heard is "Well they will get it somewhere if not me"

Thoughts?

I played war games like the Tom Clancy ones when I first got married in front of my son. My wife warned me that I should not, and she was right. I stopped.

Same goes for TV.

No, I usually yell at my little sister to get out of the room when I'm watching something violent or disturbing on TV.

Similar experience.

Over time there were many bruised calves. As he was swinging all of his toy guns, baseball bats, etc at everyone.

No, I don't smoke around little kids either, regardless of if I know them/will ever see them again. That sort of stuff really bothers me, actually.

I figure they're going to grow up and make their own decisions, so I shouldn't parade my lifestyle around them and influence it in one way or another.

I try my best not to sling rock when children are around, but I gotta get that scrill.

My cousin has let her son watch rated R movies since he was 5 or 6. He's had versions of Grand Theft Auto since he was 11 or 12 (he's 15 now) and has always smoked and swore around him, two habits that he has now picked up.

I love her, but that's simply terrible parenting IMO.

I voted for the carrot pie. mmmmmm....

As far as video games. I don't play them (not that I object to them, they just don't do it for me).

My daughter is 7 years old. She has watched the neighbors kid (a butter bar in the Air Force) play the war one on XBox (Call of Duty? I think). I didn't have a problem with it.

I did sit her down and made sure she understood what she was watching was not very realistic (you really can't get shot 900 times and still survive if you just wait a while to get your strength up, etc...).

I also draw the line at her spending alot of time watching video games (just like I do her watching TV of any kind for too long).

Interesting. Was there a particular behavior you saw in your son that triggered the conclusion she was right? (I'm not being a smart***, I'm genuinely interested.)

Nah. After the birth of my first child, Grand Theft Auto wasn't played until she was down. Then I started noticing how inappropriate my television choices were (long before she was old enough to even realize). By the birth of my second child (3.5 years ago), I had pretty much stopped following any programs and the Playstation got put up. I don't even attempt to watch a show until after 8 PM now. A Law & Order here and there or something on Discovery usually does it, if I even bother.

Even though it may deleteriously effect my profit margins, from a moral standpoint I have difficulty performing my duties as a local crack cocaine distributor when children are in the vicinity.

Better?

Very responsible of you. I'd admire you more if they could cut it by age 5, though. You're not much of a business man. I'll let you in on a little trade secret. When I do recruiting for the XYC circuit, I check the IQ's of the parents so that I can roll their brawn into pre-pubescent brain once they age out. My contracts normally reflect an "option" that I have the exclusive rights to their money-making ability for 2 years after their fighting career is done. Your welcome. This kind of advice is golden.

Ah... I get it now. That could be the first time I've ever seen deleteriously used in a sentence. Us farm boys don't talk too fancy.

There's plenty of evidence that kids are actually pretty good at understanding the difference between fiction/fantasy and reality. They know that someone on TV is just acting, and that while pretending might be fun, but it's different than real life.

However young children are probably not ready do even start playing with some kinds of concepts, so they are kept for after bedtime.

I wouldn't, but then I don't have any kids around me so I'm free to do as I please.

That is no "IMO" my friend. That's flat out terrible parenting.
