do the young artists ever jam with the "greats"

Last night, I caught Roy Orbison's Black and White concert on Netflix instant watch (as you all know, my former singer/friend is a huge Orbison fan.... )

Anyhow, I thought it was so cool that Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, KD Lang, and others were paying homage to Roy Orbison by playing this special concert with him (and of course, let's not forget, Roy was also backed by Elvis Presley's TCB Band... Burton, Sheff, and Tutt). This was late 80s. I remember another concert I saw as a teen/kid in the 80s. It was a Carl Perkins concert on television, but with him was Eric Clapton, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr (all paying homage to Carl, of course).

Then there was the Bob Dylan tv concert show back in the early 90s, which feat. Dylan, along with Petty, Harrison, Roger McGuinn, Neil Young, etc.

I remember several concerts like this back in the day. All featuring an older artist, accompanied/joined by a cast of younger artists who presumably grew up with or were influenced by the older musician.

I was thinking though, you dont see many concerts like this anymore. I mean, shouldn't some of the artists from the 80s or 90s be having these same sorts of concerts now, with a cast of modern artists joining them to celebrate their music?

I have 2 theories why there isn't.

1) there aren't any musicians from the 80s or 90s who are worthy of this sort of commemoriative, tribute these days???

or

2) there really aren't any modern, current popular musicians worthy of playing alongside the legends anymore? I mean, really.... are there really any big names in rock anymore who are current or contemporary? I mean, pop, yeah... but rock? I cant think of any modern, famous rockstar by name.

Oh, and Grammy collaborations dont count.

Slash played with the black eyed peas, if that counts.

He has played with Alter Bridge before and they rocked!

A bit off topic, but I ask the same question of us players! When I go out to see a band or friends play, I always bring my axe with the expectation that should the situation present itself I would be asked to sit in.

That's the way it was done when I was a a kid. Given the rise in "Original Only" bands, it is harder to get on stage, but War Pig is a standard, right?

You know, you're right. I remember back in the 90s and early 00s, when I was more active in bands, that this was a regular occurence. Lots of bands played covers, and I remember 2-3 sit ins a night was par for the course.

But yes, "original only' bands make sitting-in difficult. Ive played in original only bands for the past 5-6 years when I actually do play now, but I notice even with the cover bands in town, sitting-in isnt as prevelant.

And no "War Pigs" isnt a standard. That would be "Paranoid".

Alter Bridge is an amazing band that I'm glad is out of the mainstream for the most part. Or at least they're not played hardly at all around where I'm at.

In other news, John Mayer played with Crossroads with Eric Clapton on Good Morning America a few years back.

Yep, this was the sort of stuff that is lacking today. A young, gifted guitarist jamming with a legendary guitarist. However, I think the lack of this occurence is bc there arent many "young, gifted musicians" in the mainstream. Everyone is a manufactured, pop vocalist. Oh well.... maybe musicianship will be in vogue again soon.

Mayer is awesome! His studio material is very pop oriented, but live he plays solo guitar more than he sings. He sounds even better when Pino is holding the low-end down.
