One the one hand I'm afraid we may be out of contention without him, and seeing a guy who has been a core player for my team for the past 8 or so years in another uniform isn't going to feel right. He was a big personality, who when he wasn't a thorn in the clubhouse side, always seemed to have a great time on the field, and I liked that. Not to mention he's one of the greatest hitters of my time, as well as the best at playing the Monster in Left.
On the other hand, who knows how this ordeal that has increasingly gotten worse over the past month has affected the team as a whole. They aren't exactly playing at their top game (although this is typical post All-Star break Sox, and although they did just get swept, it was by the Angels, the best team in the Majors) right now, so maybe this trade can clear the air and they can just focus on baseball. Jason Bay has been putting up the same offensive numbers as Manny this year, and hell, at least we got rid of Craig Hansen!
In the end, I don't hold a grudge against him, his beef is with the ownership, not the rest of the team, the city of Boston or the Red Sox' fanbase. Plus, so little is known of what has actually gone on between them over the years (Manny and the Red Sox front office). He helped my team win their first World Series since 1918, and then another one last year, and throughout his stay in Boston he proved he is with a doubt one of the best hitters the game has seen and is Hall of Fame bound (with a Sox hat on his plaque, no less). I'll miss his presence, but it's time to move on. Even knowing they probably wouldn't pick up their option on him at the end of the year, I wanted him to stick around to give us that competitive edge, but now that it's over and done with, it's almost a relief.
Goodbye Manny, this is one Red Sox fan that'll still love ya. Just don't sign with an American League team next year, please! |

Why any slugger would want to play at Dodger stadium is beyond me though. Something tells me his stay as a Dodger will be a short one.

Ah, that ol' Cubs fan sentiment - you probably think you're entitled to win the world series every year, just like all of the other Cubs fans
But also just like every year, you won't win it either

how about them white sox getting griffey? what the hell are they thinking? | Thats another trade that makes no sense at all. First of all, where in the heck is he gonna play? The only way they have a spot for him is if they bench either Konerko or Swisher. And even then whats to keep Griffey from ripping his quad to shreds walking from the on deck circle to the batters box.
Im a lifelong cubs fan, and I have officially done what I said I wouldn't do. I've got my hopes up.

Its not so much as I think we are entitled to it, I think its the best chance we have ever had. And I will be the first person to call them a bunch of bums if they blow it.
This team matches up well with any MLB team to date. Its their own fault if they blow it.

But also just like every year, you won't win it either | We will win it this year. THIS year will be different. The Cubs had a short down point of their season, but this SWEEP took them right out of it. Now they can get back to being the best team in baseball. That's not even "Cubs fan bragging", either, they held the best record in all of baseball for most of the season so far. |

Im a lifelong cubs fan, and I have officially done what I said I wouldn't do. I've got my hopes up. | from what i hear, Griffey is going to be in CF, Swisher will get bumped to 1B, and Konerko is going to be grabbing some pine. I've also heard about Swisher going back to the As for that reliever they got, that's up on the trading block. |

I think it's expected that Griffey will play CF while Swisher moves to 1B to platoon with the slumping Konerko.
and I was a minute too late :-\

too old to get out there on defense regularly and konerko is prone to slumping if benched so they gotta keep him in and swisher plays good defense so he stays too - i think the w sox just want to get every old possible future HOF before they retire (see Frank Thomas) |

looking at the depth chart for the sox, they got Griffey in the OF and DH, Thome to 1st base?
BTW Thomas put in 15 seasons with the sox, and still a fan favorite. people still love him here in Chicago. |
