A conscious what?

I'm conscious, I hope. It's better than being unconscious, except when I'm sleeping.

That's kind of a vague question. In what sense are you asking the question?

I have one. Not sure about the folks running the country, though.

I don't know about America, but I'm pretty sure I'm nuts. My friends think the same.

I hope not. This does not need to be political. I'm just wondering if we as a people have lost our way.....

Like, has it been mostly downhill since we've stopped keeping people as slaves and went to war against each other?

No. The price of not having one is paid for with entitlements, foreign aid, bailouts, and throwing money at other high volume money vacuums. The luxury of not having one is paid for, and the price is quite high.

I don't think we ever had a conscience. We like to think we do and we do little things to make us as a people and a country feel good about ourselves.

But overall...no.

Too many examples of past improprieties.

slavery, native american genocide, guatemalan venereal disease testing, imperialism throughout the 19th & 20th centuries, etc...

People have always been people. I don't think we are any better or worse than we've ever been at any point in time in history. We've constantly adjusted and, as a whole, have gotten better as a global society; but as individuals I think we're no better or worse than we've ever been.

Americans have a selective conscience. We like to think we take the high road at all times, but quite often, we'll bend the rules when it's beneficial to us individually.
