I had a gig in San Francisco yesterday & stopped at the Park/Beach Chalet on Great Highway (along the ocean). The Beach Chalet was built in 1925 and has numerous mosaics & murals adorning the walls. It's walking into a little bit of SF history.
Well I decided to snap a photo of one of the murals...
What was the original artist trying to convey in this mural?
I just feel a little dirty that my mind went to the gutter when I noticed this. And the mural was also right by the enterance to the bathrooms. |

But the way it's set up looks like it's meant to make you think it's perverted. It's like some kind of weird visual double entendre meant to say, "Hey, get you mind out of the gutter!"

JK! - I agree... that mural is a little creepy.

It would be seen then as a man about to give his children some candy.
And look into the background,...a man folding a boat sail.
In today's world, that might look to many as a man wrapping his murdered girlfriend before discarding her.

For example the word "gay" had an entirely different connotation in 1925 than it does now. Thinking of that picture as perverted is merely a product of this era's oversexualised attitudes.

Though I may be wrong. |

Trust me. Taking a photo near the women's restroom isn't that big a deal in SF. We have nude parades here. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
