Does anyone here work in the shipping/maritime industry?

I'm growing increasingly tired of my job by the day. I know this isn't a great time to look for other employment, especially considering I have all the job security one could ask for, but I'm thinking of making a change. I'm currently in the shipping/maritime industry, and would like to stay in this field if at all possible.

If there are any of you that work in this field, what is it that you do? I'm kind of exploring some options right now, and want to know what else is out there. I'm currently expecting to go back to school for a Masters' from Fort Schuyler, but that's not set in stone.

I just read in the paper that there are about 800 empty cargo ships anchored in the Strait of Malacca, due to the slowdown of the world economy.

Commercial diver, always plenty of work in that field. A new job every day, pretty good pay, and you could work in some pretty interesting locations. I was really interested, but all the training I could find was from a bunch of ex-Navy Divers who wanted to be drill sergeants to their students and I'll have had enough military by the time I am done with this enlistment.

I guess my commercial diving career would be limited to training new recreational scuba students, but that suits me just fine.

Peace,
Greg

I don't work in it, but I love most things maritime and my grandpa was a captain of cargo ships for quite a while, the last company being MSC. When growing up my mum went on quite a few trips with him and has some great stories.

Always loved going on the ships and getting pressies for all over globe too.

Are you limiting the discussion to sea based shipping or opening it to all shipping? I've worked in the transportation industry for almost thirty years, though only dealing with ground and air carriers.
