Does the internet see me?

Ha! I know. Strange right?

Here's what I mean. I am in a hydraulics class at school (cool class by the way). And I used a friend's thumb drive to get a simulation software to use for the class this morning. I have NEVER looked up anything on hydraulics in the internet. Heck, the class just started. All I have done is some book work and a couple of labs.

Anyway, I just had an ad on my TB page for some sort of "Extreme hydraulics cylinder" thingy. Hello? Mr.Interwebs. Are you looking through my program files? Do I need to come in there and kill you in the face?

This is an excellent post for the Boring Thread.

Those are targeted ads. Smart cookies track stuff on your PC, and show you what you wanna see, so to speak.

The internet is like the Universe, and we're its eyes staring back at it.

Clear your cache, cookies, and internet tag items/memory everytime you go to use your computer. It only takes a few seconds.

No but i do, and you need to not wear that shirt again.

That's deep, I like it.

alembicguy 01-18-2013 05:52 PM

If this is true I should go put pants on

I should probably pull my pants up if that's the case :hiding:

If the internet's been watching me, it must like what it sees.

The webcam on my laptop used to randomly come on until I manually disabled it.

I know a few people that put electrical tape over their web cams.

will33 01-18-2013 06:59 PM

I see what you're doing there.....stop that.

Really, patwnt applications have been filed for technology that could, via camera and microphone, decipher what's going on in your home. Hear you and your spouse arguing?...cue commercial for relationship counseling or divorce attorneys. Watch you doing it?...cue birth control or viagra ads...

Don't believe me?.....search it up....stay away from the tinfoil hat stuff, stick to actual filings and legal documents, etc.

Of course, anyone who could figure out how to use this for nefarious purposes will do so, including, and especially, the government. So far, mostly involves television providers....

The built in laptop webcam is a given...same thing applies to your smartphone....those things have microphones on them too.

Gov't employees (school administrators) have already been caught multiple times spying on tens of thousands of people in their bedrooms via gov't supplied (school provided, taxpayer purchased) laptops, which they "explained away" as a "mistake" and allow to continue to this day.

Do you use Google to search up things related to this class...or yahoo....bing....or just about any search engine? They keep track of everything ever searched, as well as every email ever sent or recieved (gmail, yahoo, etc....free email really isn't free) in order to build a profile on you. This manifests itself in targeted ads, etc.

Yes so I left mine off so it wouldn't be to awkward!

PWRL 01-18-2013 07:25 PM

So the answer then is yes, the internet does see you.
