I upgraded my HDD on my studio PC and had a few issues cloning the old drive, mainly because Dell had made some stupid hidden partition on the original drive for their totally useless "Home Media" thing.
So, clean install time. It took a few hours, but everything is up and working just tickety-boo. I'm actually glad I was forced into doing this, as what I have now is way better than just a clone of all the crap on the original drive.
Aaaah....

Re-installing Windows is a PITA IMHO. It took hours of sitting through endless downloads of Windows updates, re-installing drivers, the whole nine yards. And my installer loads up my system with all sorts of adware that I then have to delete. |

I've been on 7 since Beta, and only re-installed when they release the RTM version to us on TechNet. |

7 Feels like what Vista "should've been", and more. Quote:

Having said that, on my other PC, used for music/recording/home studio purposes, it's still XP all the way, until I absolutely have to change. In that setup, the less resources the OS uses, the better, imo.

I've been running Windows 7 since Januari, and the only issues I've had were with installs that insisted on checking the Windows or Internet Explorer version. Retail is pretty much without issues, except for Sony's strange way of implementing the special buttons on the keyboard. Had that working in the RC1, but I forgot what I installed, so now I'm SOL for the moment. I'm pretty confident that will work out once Sony releases W7-aware drivers.
I carry a bootable 32GB USB stick with W7 and all the apps I use. Clean install takes about two hours. Nothing much to it. But I'm the consummate geek, and I've got more laptops than reasonable...

I can reload the XP Pro OS on my laptop in about 90 minutes start to finish.
When I blew away the Vista on this new Gateway and installed the Windows 7 64 bit RTM (thank you Ray), it took maybe an hour tops.

-Mike | 90 minutes? What a slacker I can have it done in ~ 45 at tops.
