Dog Owners / Lovers

Hey All,
I saw something today that I can not remember ever having seen before. I saw a female dog back up to a piece of lumber, lift her leg and pee as if marking it like male dogs do. I was sure this dog was a female, and took another gander and saw no male plumbing. I have never seen a female dog do this. A couple of minutes later I saw her do it again in another place.
I have always thought only male dogs show this "marking" behavior. Has anyone else seen a female dog do this ? Just very very strange to me. I have been a dog owner/ lover all my life and have been around bazillions of dogs. Have I just not noticed or is this a confused dog ?

Sometimes female dogs pick up that from the male dogs if they're around more male dogs than females. If her litter was all males or if she never had a female influence, that'd eb the way she learned to mark her territory.

It is not uncommon in dominant females, just as "squatting to pee" is not uncommon in particularly submissive males.

And not just submissive ones. My male dog does this every now and then, and it's the most dominant dog I've ever dealt with. But I do admit it's mostly because the lack of something to raise a leg to. If there isn't any snow, tree, a rock, he will quite often just squat. Happens atleast once or twice a week.

Hmm, interesting replies. She does run with a male dog, so the learned behavior thing makes sense. Didn't know that happened, I have seen the crossover humping thing and know that is about dominance. I have been enlightened.

That's not a male only thing, it's a dominance thing. Female cats will also spray.

My very large - and gonadless - male golden has squatted to pee all his life. When he was younger I tried to show him a couple of times, but he won't man up.

I've seen my grandfather's dog do this on occasion, although she only does it immediately after another dog does it on the same location.

I guess dogs also enjoy a good 1-upping.

Peeing like a male was the only way my female dobie Megan knew how to do it. She was a rescue, so who knows what she went through before I got her. She wasn't all that territorial but was very dog-aggressive.

I think she saw herself as an "Alpha Dog," so peeing like a male suited her fine. The equipment for playing "top this" is so much more limited on females that sometimes she really had to get creative as to how she managed to get the "top pee."

Did it until the day she passed. I'm not sure, but I don't think I ever saw her pee like a female.

Great dog, but I never saw any other dog impressed by her skillz. Strange...
