If you own a dog, please don't let them eat grapes or raisins. We lost our 5 year old shepherd mix yesterday because he got into some raisins. Neither my wife or I new that raisins were toxic to dogs. It is not commonly know like chocolate. Please let any friends and family that have dogs know about raisins, too.
R.I.P. Sammy
Here is the Wikipedia page that describes the raisin hazard to dogs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grape_a...xicity_in_dogs

We just learned about the grapes/raisins thing last year. So sad that you had to learn this way.
RIP Sammy

Tylenol is REALLY bad for cats. It causes their red blood cells to literally burst (licing) and then they can't carry oxygen and suffocate internally.
We lost a cat (this past year) because she liked hiding in our bathroom closet and we had dropped a single Tylenol at some point and she ate it.
Sorry for your loss.

You can add hops to the list of things toxic to dogs. Literature says that it can cause malignant hyperthermia. As a precaution, I tend to send my dog to doggie day care on days I brew beer. |

My dog got into some Valentines chocolates this past February. I did some emergency research on Google and determined she was going to be sick, but would most likely ride it out. I did not know about raisins and appreciate the warning.
During my panic research I found an interactive calculator to use to help determine if a dog ingested a toxic amount. Of course, your veterinarian is your best source of information, but every bit of info helps. http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/20...ns-interactive http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/20...rt-interactive

-Mike | According to the link posted above it's not. Has the same compounds as onions that dogs can't digest that are toxic. You probably aren't giving them enough to do harm. Quote: |

I believe spaghetti sauce is bad for them as well. Also, Poinsettia plants are toxic to cats- something in the leaves or flowers is very dangerous. |

-Mike | a dose of garlic is a great insect repellant for us Bill-Hillies, too. a crushed/chewed clove keeps ticks at bay. they'll crawl on you but never bite. highly recommended for city folk who like to go hiking or camping.

As an additional FYI since no one has brought it up yet:
Also beware of some sugar-free gums - many contain the sugar substitute Xylitol and it's extremely toxic as well.
