He's kicked several dudes asses in defense of women he has never met. He'd go to bat for anyone in our family without question. At our wedding, one of the catering staff stole my wife's bag that had the cash from the money dance in it. My brother was ready to bust some heads. I had to tell my cousins husband, who is a LEO, to just turn a blind eye and let him do his thing.

He was stabbed and killed while trying to break up a fight between two drunken patrons. What were they fighting about? Which sports team was the best between their favorites.

I haven't talked to him directly, just his brother who is my age and has been my friend for about 30 years. I am inclined to believe he felt his life was threatened. He isn't a fighting confrontational type, but who knows how it all really went down that night. Time to wait on the investigation to unfold.
I do know there is a large Samoan gang presence in these parts, and they have been responsible for some, violent and illegal activities now and then. This friend is mine is about half the size of your average Samoan, so it appears to be him and his buddy were over matched from the beginning.

Feeling your life threatened PLUS no way of getting out of the situation other than self defense are both required generally.

I wish your friend the best of luck in a very difficult situation.
I generally feel very sorry for the "self defense" folks in these situations. It's a very difficult, stressful, and dangerous situation that is basically a lose/lose for the upstanding citizen.
I'm just pointing out the legal aspects of it, whether I agree with them or not.

My apologies. | I generally think the laws have good intentions, but sometimes they hold untrained civilians to an overly high standard... plus they are sometimes self contradictory.
That being said, when it comes right down to it, the old saying applies:
"I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6"

It's an uplifting story to me, because it seems like the man who defended himself isn't going to jail. Too many times, innocent civilians exercising their right to self defense (with or without a firearm) end up in jail, while more and more criminals realize that their victims become less and less likely to defend themselves. |

Which sports team was the best between their favorites. | An actor colleague of mine was very subtly removed from a Wisconsin bar because he had come in wearing a Vikings hat. The bartender was actually saving his life, he said, because two guys down at the other end of the bar were getting pretty riled up. My buddy even got his pint for free, he just had to promise to leave as soon as he was finished!
