Don't use Network Solutions for domain registration!

Sign in to disble this ad
Any domain name that you search for at http://www.networksolutions.com/ will immediately be registered by Network Solutions. You are then forced to go through Network Solutions to register the domain.

This is a completely unacceptable practice. Though I'm sure that public outcry will force them to stop this practice, this is only one of many reasons to avoid Network Solutions.

More info at:
http://domainnamewire.com/2008/01/08...-frontrunning/
and
http://slashdot.org/articles/08/01/08/1920215.shtml

Guess who owns http://www.networksolutionssucksdonkeyballs.com/ now? All I had to do was look it up at Network Solutions and now they own it.

Anybody else have any domains that they'd like Network Solutions to own? Just head on over to http://www.networksolutions.com/ and look it up!

Well they are parented by Verisign. Which also owns a bunch of other registrars including NameSecure.

I used to work for Versign/Network Solutions in Herndon years ago.

There is no reason whatsoever to use Network Solutions for domain registration or anything else anymore. They had a monopoly on that business for long enough and there are several registrars with better service and pricing.

I've registered a few domains with them in the past no problem.

I've been using this:
https://www.domaindiscover.com/

for many years. I ditched Network Solutions a long time ago because they sucked so hard.

Let's also not forget the Verisign fiasco where they redirected every domain typo to their own search page.

I did a search and up came a screen stating "Congratulations! the following domains are available".

I don't see how that constitutes "immediately registered". You have to go through several steps to actually register the domain.

Nice. I almost went to work for them in Olympia a few years ago. The job involved too much tier one support for their calling cards, so I declined the offer of employment.

Okay, now try to register that domain through another service. You can't. You are now locked into Network Solutions and get to pay $35 to register your domain.

But since namesecure is the same company go to their site and just register it for 10-12 bucks.

gotta hand it to them, that's pretty clever. I don't have ideas like this and that's why I'm not rich. Well, morals too of course.

The thing is ICANN has to keep them in check for these "behaviors" and not a whole lot gets done.

I read thru the Slashdot link you posted. It's not QUITE what it seems. Network Solutions essentially puts a "4-day hold" on the domain name that is being searched for. They don't actually spend any money to formally register it, and they don't technically "own" it. The hold is released after 4 days if you haven't purchased it (from them). Still, it's a bad practice, and hopefully they'll stop it.

I've bought a few domains recently thru Yahoo, it's simple and cheap.

Maybe you could work up to a more evil level? Start with drinking, move on to petty theft, etc.?

Way ahead of you on drinking, but I think that's just going to make me LESS rich.

I stole a candy bar from a store when I was 7. So I guess that's a start.

I guess people better learn if they don't know how to swim then then better not go deeper than their knees at the surfline eh? What were you doing during the 'golden hour' rescue.. did I see you driving a rescue boat in that episode?
