It sounds like something that was blown totally out of proportion, like the Don Imus controversey.

Not that I'm a fan of Dr. Laura (and I've always had a huge problem with her placing the "Dr." title before her name in an effort to try and legitimize her pop psychology advice when her doctorate is not in psychology).

Nowhere did I read that Dr. Laura used the word against anybody. It was a commentary on how there's a double-standard. Again, I think it's been blown out of proportion.

Thumbs down

I first had problems with her years ago. I heard a guy call in... he was a brand-new father, and he was at the end of his rope because, while it sounded like he was fulfilling all his responsibilities, his wife blasted him every time he stepped out of the house. I mean, he was literally asking Dr. Laura whether she thought it was okay for him to go down the block to mail a letter or get a cup of coffee and come right back.
I was ready for her to say "Everyone needs a break," but instead she scolded him for being immature and said something like, "You should have known you were making a commitment. Now live up to it!!"
I have two kids (8 and 5), and I know this whole scenario. My wife, also, thought Laura was being nuts about this. She's a bully, and a twisted one at that.

She could have said it another way so as to show respect for the caller, who called in because she was bothered by a race issue. Not to mention anyone else who is offended by the word. Many of us here on TB made the same exact point without doing it in such a blunt-force trauma way. This lady gets an from me.

A black lady, who was married to a white man, called in and said that he allows his family and friends to say racist crap around her. Then the so called "doctor" went into this diatribe to show that it was cool, because black people do it. GTFOH! Cogent enough for ya?

Don't get me wrong - I think the woman's an idiot, as well as the other people of her ilk (e.g., Limbaugh, Liddy, Coulter, etc.). I agree that she should have probably chose a better way to express herself. I guess, however, that I just don't understand the outrage over it, considering the context that she said it in.

In all of these discussions it strikes me that so many people don't understand how context matters.

A caller says that her husbands friends and family make racist comments including using the "n-word" as a slur and her response is that black comedians say it on TV so she shouldn't be offended. Really?

Then again based on my limited experience with her show, Laura Schlessinger doesn't seem concerned with understanding anyone else's views on anything or exploring any opinions that differ from her own.

Yeah, it's a lot more cogent than eye-rolling. If other people see the outrage, I understand. For me personally, I'm looking at the context. I agree that it was in bad taste, but I'm not screaming from the roof tops. Others may; they have different experiences and views of the world. That's fine. *shrugs*

What's with you guys and this "context"? Here's the "context": She tells a black caller that it's okay for her white husband to allow his family and friends to say racist crap to and around her, because "you people do it." C'mon, I know this is TB (where a mod told me that hanging a noose in a black person's yard is not a sign of a racist), but gimme a break.

Not much outrage, just a big fat "F this lady."
Especially considering the context she said it in, that context including who she was talking to. Sub that word in for whatever word you have the most disdain for, or whatever is the most insulting to you and whatever group you identify yourself with, and you may feel similar. Or maybe not. Iono

Oh yeah! Now I can post this..I wanted to post it in the other thread. This is a movie I highly recommend. A little outrageous, and a cold movie to watch, but insightful. And makes a good point to colored folk and non-colored folk alike

Well, that's a different issue, and I do agree with you on that. I thought the original issue was the fact that she used a racial slur on the air. That alone, to me, was what people were making a mountain out of a molehill about.

The fact that she said that other people use racial slurs so what's the big deal is incredibly stupid.
