Dreads?

Sign in to disble this ad
Anyone on TB have 'em and can give me some info?

I'm about halfway to the length where I can start forming some dreads but before I do I just wanna know a few things about them. I have met a few people with them and the biggest problem by far is that they smell like hot garbage. Is there a way to avoid this besides spraying febreeze on your hair? lol

I've read a few sites about them and the information is all over the place. I wanna know directly from someone who has/had them.

The problem as I see it is people with naturally-kinky hair can wash their dreads and smell nice, whereas people whose hair is not naturally kinky can't wash their hair much if they want to keep the dreads.

You have to wash them, I think you can get special dread shampoo or something. I don't have them but my new drummer has. He was in a rush to get home from practice last time I saw him as he had to wash his dreads. I guess this means it takes some time and effort to wash them properly without destroying them.

I had Dreads for a bit, just got rid of them last week. Just wash them once or twice a week with some dread shampoo and they shouldn't smell. Mine didn't. Just make sure that when they are still forming that you pull them all apart after you wash them, because they will all mat together for the first 5 or so month. Dreads are a lot of work for a few months, then almost no work at all. I only cut mine off because they were too hot for working outside in the summer.

IMO dreads are the stupidest look a white dude can go for. To me they just make a white guy look like he's trying too hard.

Trying to hard to look hip. Another facet of it is that black dudes have a reason to have dreads. If their hair grows long it fro's out, dreads is the only way to keep it long without a fro for them.

To some people if you are white and you have dreads you are tying to look black.

I don't care either way, but I can honestly say they look really disgusting on white guys, IMO.

Can you reverse dreads and take them out? It would kind of suck to grow your hair real long and be limited to dreads. At least with regular hair you can pull it back into a pony tail and make it look neat if you want to look dressy for a picture or something.

Well, I am definitely not trying to act black LOL. I'm going for more of this type of look actually, except a longer beard:

(Chris Barnes from the band Six Feet Under)

And from what I have read, you can reverse dreads but it's VERY damaging to your hair so people just shave there heads when they are through with them.

Real dreads are a lot of hardwork when I was reading up on them. I've only had dread extentions before and I loved them. Wear them for a month, and you can get them retightened or store them for another year sorta thing. They last forever, minus the maintenance, and you can get cool colours too.

i pondered having them a few years ago. When my hair gets long, it turns into an afro. I ended up just having an afro instead. Then I got sick of that and keep my hair shorter now. I do wish I could have longer hair without it getting fro-y.
