Last week when I was in New Hampshire, my rental car was a 2009 Nissan Altima hybrid. After driving it for five days, no thank you.
Everytime I pushed on the accelerator, the gas motor came on. Then when I started to coast, it would shut off and go to electric but it sounded like I was running out of gas. So quite often I got caught in these middle areas where I would start coasting, then need to speed up. So the gas motor got stuck in the middle of stopping and starting. It made the ride jerky here and there and gave me no confidence there was any GO power if I needed to stomp on it to get out of the way or pass someone.
No disrespect to anyone here who has one, but I did not like it one bit. It's nice and all to be conscious of your carbon footprint, but I won't be buying one of these vehicles ever.

-Mike | Isn't that a bit like trying one dud petrol car, circa 1910, and deciding all petrol cars are going to be a waste of time?

A hybrid "likes" to be driven differently than a traditional IC gasoline rig. Diesels, while another world altogether, also typically work better when driven differently than a gas.
A person with an interest and / or appreciation for the technology, or mechanism, with regards to hybrids / diesels will likely find something likable about the experience. Others will not.

I guess I come from a time where if your car stopped running while you were driving it, it was ******.
I just can't get used to the way the hybrid operates.

I don't like chainsaws because they don't handle like wood saws.
I get your point, though. It's a totally new feeling. The Altima's engine behavior is especially irritating. I tried a Prius and it felt pretty cool, mainly because the gas engine seldom started, even on smooth accelerations. The lack of noise gets you sleepy, though.

That said, the traction control drives me crazy - I like to drive a little harder than it wants me to. I drive the car with a much lighter touch than I did my WRX, but it still has a rough time on wet mountain roads.
My next car I'll go back to AWD. Love the hybrid mileage, and most of the driving characteristics, but that one thing drives me nutx.

| | | | The hybrid approach seems to complicated to me. I would rather have a straight up electric car with an on-board gas powered electric generator. |

Ummm... that is a hybrid. A different type of hybrid, but still a hybrid.
That is how the Chevy Volt is supposed to work (plus be pluggable).

-Mike | How big are you? The Altima is on the large side of mid-sized sedans.
