Drum Corps/ Marching Band

Any TB'ers marched for/ worked with, or like any dci corps or marching band?

Couldnt find a thread on the topic so I figured I'd start one up.

Talk about what you like, who you like, what you've done, anything relating to marching band really.

I like watching both high school and dci bands. I marched every year in high school and junior and senior year had featured solos in our state champ winning performances. Senior year the show was actually written around me as the main character. I am not sure if I'll march corp yet, but I have had some nice offers.

I Love watching bands and corps for the design and creativity. Seeing something done in a way it hasnt been before. Stuff like that.

What about you?

my son marches in the high school drumline. he was never a uniform-wearing kinda guy, but he really digs this. at his school the marching band has a strong sense of community so it is a good thing. also, his drum teacher tells me if he sticks with it, he could get a scholarship to the local university. and that works just fine for me...

so, yeah, more power to the drumline!

I did marching band in high school for all four years at one of the better schools in TN. It was a lot of fun because we didn't play your traditional sorts of high school marching band music. We did stuff more DCI related, which was really cool. Actually, the assistance band director at my school marched for Delta, and one of my closest buds also went on to march for Delta (I think he finished his last possible season there this year).

I actually have to accredit marching band (and just band in general) to my continuous pursuit of music. Had my mom not forced me to give it a try freshman year I probably never would of stuck with music, or at least not of gotten as good at it.

If you'd like for me to get you in contact with my friend I'd be more than willing to hook you up either with his number or email address. Just PM me.

And just a shameless plug This was actually just an okay year for us. Our 2006 show, however, was amazing, but I can't find any videos of it. The first bit of music you hear is based off of the music you hear at Disney's Epcot when they have their fireworks and lights show at the end of the night.

Bass guitarist in the Attica High School band for 3 of my 4 years there. Became Official band of the Buffalo Bills my Junior year and they still are. Tons of fun, marched in the Toronto Santa Claus parade every year (Ever play bass in gloves?), played Citrus Bowl parade, Disney World, and Universal studios.

I graduated with 140 kids in my class. There were 210 people in the band.

I was in the drumline for 3 years in high school. I was the snare line leader my junior year and was the drum section leader my senior year it was about the only fun I had in HS.

I was briefly in a DCI corps in the mid-80's after HS. Had to quit because my dad thought it was a dumb idea to quit the factory job he had helped me get to go on tour for the summer. One of my biggest regrets.

Somewhere I still have my medals and trophies from those days not to brag but I was pretty good. I took up bass in the summer between my junior and senior year and was in 3 different band classes that year, snare in the marching band, tympani and percussion in the concert band, bass in the "jazz" band and bass in my first garage bands all at the same time. I was a little busy that year lol

We won state my senior year. Our techs have always had corps experience from crossmen to blue devils and everywhere in between. Im actually about to return as brass instructional staff, the brass head tech. So that will be a good experience. Especially since it will be my first semester out of high school and they offered me the job over some pros.
Ha. But I have to give them credit. For a little redneck town in Oklahoma, the design staff is amazing at what they do and im glad to join them.

I was in marching band all four years in high school. My best friend and I were both stuck underneath tubas for marching season. Somewhat ironically, DCI was not an option to be considered for us because talking about it just seemed to confuse our parents.

The reason that that is ironic is that both he and I had a younger brother who did march dci later. His brother was a Madison Scout. Mine was with a new corps called Black Gold. I don't know if they're still around.

I do know the one I wanted to try out for went away a year or two later. Does anyone remember the Bridgemen?

I played all the low brass, so basically I went where they told me. "Euphonium this time? Okay." For marching season there is basically no such thing as enough bottom end, so several people were moved to tuba just for the season. Occasionally as a gimmick we would have me play bass guitar and have several alternates push a big cart with batteries, a converter and a huge Peavey Mk II bass amp on it.

That went away the time it rained and a few of us got shocked.

My first year in high school we had the electric guitar and bass with their amps on the sidelines and a local version of the Lockers dancing but then a just retired Army bandsman took over as he was working on his teaching credentials and cut them out.

At my school most of the glory went to the Jazz Workshop, our stage band. The marching/concert band just supplemented them on shows after football season. We didn't have an orhrestra eventhough the junior high schools were still producing as many violin players as horn blowers and percussionist.

We used to enjoy going to those DCI shows. My cousin was with the Cadets of Bergen County the year they finished 2nd, then he went on to be the drum major for the Dubuque Colts maybe it was. Here in Madison, I remember the Scouts were always like top 10 finishers and we always liked that corps out of Illinois who always did arrangements of classical music and always finished high. Power and precision. I played marching marimba for my HS marching band and we played at the halftime of 2 Packer games, so yea, I have fond memories.
