Drummers are elite athletes...

Sign in to disble this ad
Did a search, can't find whether this has been posted before. Here are a couple of recent articles:

Rock drummers 'are top athletes'

"Playing the drums for a rock band requires the stamina of a Premiership footballer, research suggests."

Drummers are elite athletes - no joke!

"THEY have been the butt of jokes, and even the most agile of their number have seldom been regarded as paragons of physical virtue."

I hate how people like band geeks, or flag girls think just because something is physically demanding that makes it a sport.

I was a band geek... and I let the color guard girls think whatever they wanted.

I've always admired Bun E. Carlos for how ripped he is.

Being a drummer, let me tell you that it sucks to play a gig where you have arguably put more physical effort into the music than anyone else, and then they go sit backstage with their girlfriends and complain about how hard their jobs are while you are stuck, dog tired, disassembling and putting away your kit all alone. I would hope that the really cool people at Talkbass would have the good grace to help out their exhausted drummer at the end of the night

I always give a hand to my drummer. It saves time, and there's less sweat infiltrating the drum heads

Amen. Though my bandmates graciously help me load and unload as with my crutches I'm pretty useless. *lol* But setting up and tearing down is all on me, though I don't bitch about it now that I see what my guitarist has to go through. Granted he doesn't HAVE to do this, but he usually brings a laptop and a mixer and we record every gig, so he has a mess of wires and other things that he has to pack up. I'm done long before he is.

I always say though that one of these days I'm just showing up to the gig with a bass, snare, pair of hi-hats and a ride. My greatest compliment from them would be if they didn't miss anything.

I remember a drummer in Portland (ME) whom I saw jamming in the street. I told him I found very impressive that he played such good lines on such a simple setup.

He said "What are you talking about? I got another whole drum set there." while pointing at his brushes beside him.

I like that

My main thing is that I'd miss having at least a floor tom. So I'd have to keep that.

Aren't there drums that have a vertical bass drum with a tom on top?
