I would ride it if I could train in something smaller say 20-25 foot. I just don't have access to waves or a waverunner (at least not for that purpose). But yeah, I'd ride it. Towing in, with all that speed, and how early you can get into them, makes it a whole lot easier than paddling in. Not saying that what he's doing is any less dangerous. That's a huge wave by all accounts and the dude riding it is a well known pro.

I recall a pic a few years back someone took from the top of a swell like that looking down at the beach before them in the distance with a bunch of other riders...THAT freaked me out just as much. Amazing stuff.
edit: oops, not the beach, but yeah

Of course, in reality I'd probably just break myself and die trying something like that. I'll stick to watching others and if I surf it'll be on a leetle wave. *hold fingers an inch apart* |

edit: oops, not the beach, but yeah | Oh yeah. That's teahupoo in Tahiti. It's arguably the heaviest wave in the world. Do you notice how it's bending below sea level right in front of the face? That wave sucks so hard you're about three feet below sea level right there. On top of that, depending on the tide, this beast is breaking in about three feet of water on razor sharp reef. I don't think I'd surf this wave. At least not at this size. I've heard on smaller days it can actually be pretty fun.
Here's Shane Dorrian surfing the same wave. |

This footage gives you a great idea of the kind of speed these guys are dealing with. It also gives you some perspective on how they film Jaws. This guy is nuts. He bombs the barrel on a 60 foot wave. http://www.surfline.com/surflinetv/s...ant-tube_41684 |

Slide #23. WTH is that at the back of "Nixon's" board? Looks like he's put a JATO back there for added thrust. |

He said it was in some ways much scarier than surfing or windsurfing there, although I don't think he's actually surfed any of the really big days himself. Anyhow, the waverunner crews have to be really sharp, and the photographers in the water are at huge risk from every side at once.
I've been to Maui quite a few times, but never in season for Jaws going off. I'd love to see it, but 6-10 feet Hawaaian is really about as big as I could comfortably hack on a sailboard. The Hawaiians really sandbag on wave height too -- I've seen "flat" mean head-high or better on some occasions. That's already plenty scary for this ol' hippie geezer... |

| | | ^^ That looks really scary. I don't think I have ever seen a wave that looks like that. It's like two waves in one. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
