This one is for all you auto mechanics (armchair and actual) out there...
For the past two days my car is "lagging"
It's an 2001 Infinity G20, 4cylinder, 2.0 litter, manual
It's a manual, when I shift into say 3rd gear it shifts just fine but when I hit the gas to accelerate it revs way up before accelerating.
So like I go to pass a guy on the freeway, I'm cruising in 5th and drop down to fourth then hit the gas to overtake the guy, the car revs up to 6,000+ RPM without accelerating, I back off the gas to avoid over reving the car, the RPMs come down and I can accelerate slowly.
It feels just like when I when I drove an old automatic with a crap transmission, except I'm in a manual, and there is no clunking, or jerking like when the automatic finally finds the gear.
Any idea whats wrong and what its going to cost me? Anything I can try on my own before I take it to the garage? I figure its either the clutch or the transmission...please tell me its the clutch

edit: It also sounds like it is not going to last long so get it to a shop before you have to have it towed there.

As for the exact time of replacement I have no idea, I assume around 70,000 which means that it would be due again.
In the past month I've had to replace all my tires and fix the windshield and now this... Quote: |

| After reading a lil on "how stuff works" worn clutch plate does sound like the best explanation...I'm just relieved that its probably not the trans cause I can't afford to replace it. |

The clutch plate is so worn that you can't disengage the transmission to shift gears. It is definitely time to get that car to the shop, because the next thing that happens is you won't be able to put the car into gear from neutral.
And thanks to 5StringBlues for that blast from the past. I thought I was the only guy here old enough to remember Clutch Cargo!

You're already well into the warning phase - when they start slipping like that, the clutch is telling you that its remaining life is probably measured in days, not months. A really crafty driver who can make a stick transmission dance can make a worn out clutch last longer, but that's not the case here.
Good news: it's not a hard job for any competent mechanic, so it doesn't have to be a dealership job. But since it has been slipping, make SURE that they "turn" (re-surface) the flywheel. It shouldn't need to be replaced, but it will need to be machined.
Replacing a clutch is replacing three pieces:
Throwout bearing
Clutch disc
Pressure plate
You can look up each one on Wikipedia to learn what it is. Do all three, and have the flywheel turned, and you'll be good.

Good post.
Replacing a clutch is pretty routine and it shouldn't cost all that much, either.
