I have used this product and it really works, now they warn you about the possible copyright infrindgements with the product but it really works. Many times you end up having to buy and pay more than the initial price. of course the free copy might work but then again it might not , let the buyer beware.
The exact name is DvD Cloner VI......good luck ...

The free software I use to rip is DVD shrink. Sometimes it has trouble with protected sectors. If that happens then I use DVD Decryptor.

you can go to www.download.com and look for others as well.

+1 for DVD Shrink, and as a byproduct it will remove region protections too. If you really want to edit you need a good editor program. Most available these days allow some sort of 30 free trial.
Be warned there are really no good mpeg editors, you'll need to rip to avi if you are serious about it. Personally I own and enjoy Sony Vegas.
Good luck,
Dirk

SlySoft's AnyDvd (to bypass commercial DVD copy protection) and CloneDvd (to rip onto your hard drive in ISO or VOB format) are the Windows standards for doing this.

Once it's in ISO or VOB format, you can use MovieMaker (included in Windows XP) to edit and generate an AVI file. Or at that point, you can use Mac's free iMovie to do the same thing.

Handbrake. It's super easy to use and has always worked for me.

DVD Cloner works for me, after which I use DVD Shrink, Handbrake, or both, depending on the intended use. If you need to deal with copy-protected discs, DVD Clonerhas worked well for me.
