Dwight Yoakum @ Resistol Arena, Mesquite,TX

I had a good friend pass along free tickets to see Dwight Yoakum, friday night. Dixie Chic husband, Charlie Robinson opened for Dwight with a less than energetic one hour set.( more like a practice, or get together of friends). Dwight came on stage,"on time", and tore the place down! I have to admit that I have none of his cd's, but always watched Buc Owens on "Hee Haw". What a SHOW! I have not figured out what the "BAKERSFIELD SOUND" is, but I am terribly interested now. I don't know how old he is, but his voice was flawless. I was unable to recognize any bass notes as they were reduced to nothing more than a thud or boom, by the the time the notes reached me. HIS STAGE PRESENCE, AND SHOWMANSHIP were AMAZING. Sorry I always thought of him as the dude in SLINGBLADE. I'm off to buy some of his cd's before the Super Bowl. If you get a chance check him out.YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

My two faves are Hillbilly Deluxe and dwightyoakumacoustic.net.

The later has very little bass and is basically just DY and his guitar. Sweet all around.

+1 He is amazing to see live.

I didn't even realize that I had Hillbilly Deluxe. I was listening to my songs about a week ago and a pretty cool country song came up. Low and behold it was Dwight Yokum. I had never heard that term Bakersfield Sound before. Is Merl Haggard part of that sound?

Buc Owens?

Dwight was protege of Buc Owens. But I promise you Buc never rocked a stadium like Dwight did. People were dancing on the way to get beer and going to the bathroom.I MEAN ROCKED!

You take Buck, Merle, and Dwight, and you pretty much have the Bakersfield Sound right there. It's a hardcore honky-tonk thing! A high harmony, a twangin' Tele, some expert pedal steel, maybe a fiddle, no choir of harmonies, no string section, no horns or any of that other fancy overproduced Nashville crap. Just the real stuff, what you might hear a 5-piece band put out on a hoppin' Saturday night at the club. Dwight with Pete Anderson on guitar = killer combination.

Check out "Long White Cadillac" on DwightLive, released in 1995. If you don't find yourself at least tapping your foot, you might just be dead!

Yeah I dig Merl Haggard. I have a bunch of his stuff. The older I get the more I can relate.

^^ Merle is one of my favorite songwriters.
I played a number of gigs with Brantley Kearns, who was Dwight's fiddle player for several years while Dwight was playing the punk clubs in Hollywood in the early 80s. Man, he had some great stories!

while it is a known fact that i'm pretty much a metalhead...

Dwight and a few others in this genre have actually managed to make my radar...over the years

I much prefer his first three discs (Guitars & Cadillacs (1986), Hillbilly Deluxe (1987) and Buenas Noches From a Lonely Room (1988) to his later efforts...

to me it seems on his later efforts he gave in to the pressure to become more marketable and/or commercially viable...i figured he got really bitter and burned out as he left his major label and released Blame the Vain on his own label (which sounded fairly angry and bitter to me)

aside from just about every cut on the the discs mentioned above i did manage to enjoy:

Turn it on, Turn it up, Turn me loose
Ain't that Lonely Yet
A Thousand Miles form Nowhere
Fast as You
The Back of your Hand

good to see he is putting something new out after being fairly absent for the last 5 years

That whole live album is awesome. Pete Anderson kicks butt. The bass player is rock solid.

He's Taras Prodaniuk. He's played with lots of folks besides Dwight, too!
