E-Reader suggestions?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm considering buying an e-reader of some sort. At the moment I am looking at a Kobo, 'cause I like the 'eInk' feature, plus the fact it's not as expensive as some of the other brands / models. I'm not sure that's enough to base a decision on, though. I'm looking for ease of reading, to have 'page turning' be fairly fast and easy, ability to download via wifi, ability to use a memory card to store books on, and a fairly decent battery life (minimum of 4 to 6 hours). Any of you have much experience with e-readers, and what would you recommend? I'm looking for something in the $200 or less range, which leaves out stuff like the Apple Ipad...

I think most of them are eInk?

I don't have much in the way of experience with them, but I will say try a few out in shops if you can. It does my eyes in trying to read off those things (or any kind of screen it seems).

They're all e-ink if you look at dedicated e-readers. I suggest the Nook or Kindle, as they are 150$ and both will let you go for at least a week without recharging.

Don't get fooled by iPad or "Multimedia + book" players, those will have LCD screens and most of their R&D is not in the reading experience.

5% of an iPad is for reading and you pay 600$, while 100% of a Nook is for reading, and you pay 150-200$.

My wife has the Kindle and it's great. All the tech industry guys and gals on the tech podcasts that I listen to overwhelmingly use Kindles.

+1 on Kindle.

Easy to read for long periods
Long battery life
Amazon store

that said, I still lust for an iPad, but not for reading...though in dark spaces (planes? bedtime?) it'll be nice to have the option.

I bought my wife a Kindle (3G) for Valentine's day last February. We've been together 30 years and she said it was the best present I ever got her. She's a voracious reader and was worried she'd miss the paper, but the Kindle lets her feed her habit easier. Once in a while she'll browse at a bookstore and write down books to get online. The battery lasts forever. The screen is amazingly clear. She took it on vacation to Mexico and she had no trouble reading it in the sun on the beach and people with Sonys had to shield their screens and still had glare issues. We didn't see anyone with a Nook.

She loves the way it feels and the way it works. She loves the content. We're on 8 months of heavy steady use with nothing but positive feedback.

I have a Kobo, and with it + Progect Gutenberg, my life has been made a whole hell of a lot better. You are a smart man to lean towards it.

I'm shopping around a bit too. I want one that supports epub and txt. The Sony ereaders do this but they are going the other way and raising the price on their new offerings

I'd get a Nook in a heartbeat if it handled TXT files. Honestly, what kind of device doesn't support TXT?

I'd love something I could carry with me that would hold my books and my TAB (flame away people).

I picked up a Nook (wifi) for my wife, she loves it, can read books for free in BnN stores, plus our local library system lends out e-books for the Nook but not the Kindle. something worth checking into

That's pretty cool, I did wonder if there was going to be any kind of library system. Tho I'm assuming there are ways to copy the "loaned" books.

I'm sure someone will crack it at some point, but the loaned books are dipped in DRM and go *poof* after 14 days. Still, not bad and I'm happy to see public libraries able to move into digital book lending.
