You're right to be suspicious. Let me tell you my story...
I was looking for a good used car recently and decided to try ebay motors. I found a used Honda Civic that had an insane buy it now price on it. FWIW, it was a 2006 Civic, 14K miles, loaded, Buy it now was $11,500.

So I decided to check it out. I went to carfax and purchased a membership that would allow em to look into the history of this car. It got a clean report. I was stoked. I was ready to buy it. I had already gotten a check form my bank that I could use to buy a car. But they jsut said that before writing the check, I had to call them with a VIN to make sure they would finance the car.
I called them and they ran a history check on it and told me that it had frame damage and they would not finance it.
I told them about my carfax report and how it was clean on my end.
Then the lady told me something I didn't know. She said that there are two carfax reports; one for dealers and one for consumers. SHe said that as a consumer, I could not get access to the dealer one. She said that the dealers have ways of covering past troubles with cars. And they often do it.
Now granted, this isn't just true of ebay dealers. But if you're buying a car locally, you can at least check it out and maybe even have your mechanic check it out. You can't do that on an ebay deal unless you're willing to got to wherever the vehicle is located.
Needless to say, I don't even consider buying an ebay car unless it's local and I can check it out and have my mechanic check it out.
