Inspired by the now closed Lebron James thread, and specifically this picture (that looks like my 68 SS396 Elky), show some love for the mighty El Camino.
My Elky--
And if you wanna start stereotyping, I also own two Camaros and two lifted trucks. Call me what you want, I don't care. |

Right after GM brought the Holden Monaro over rebadged as the new GTO, there was rumor about that they would bring over the Holden Ute, as well. In my opinion a MUCH better update of the El Camino than the VW-looking SSR. I know there are a few SSR owners here, and I'm sorry to offend, but that thing is an abortion of Chevy's classic muscle-styling.

They're not the best cars for here in Portland though.
Love that ride, Mike! |

My wife OTOH makes a point of saying how much she hates them whenever she sees one. She really dislikes John Cusack in movies too. My guess is she was frightened by John Cusack in an El Camino during her formative years.
I'd probably buy one just to piss her off. Then hold a boombox over my head.

I like the ones made before 1971, when they went to one headlight per side, I like the two per side look better.

The stripes are wrong for 1968, which is what year both of there are. Stripes didn't appear on the hood until 1970.
Imagine how shocked I was to see the first pic, and realize it's pretty much a dead ringer for my El Camino. |

Oh, and it was the 1,000th to the last one ever made, #883 of 1882 built in it's final year.
Unfortunately, it was falling apart, I needed something more reliable, and had to sell it to a guy who promised to restore it. I ended up buying a Chevy HHR, built in the same factory as the beast:

i would be remiss not to show a vehicle my dad assembled:
here's the link: http://pontiacexcitement.page.tl/196...ckup-Truck.htm
my dad envisioned it as a 'motorama show car that gm should have built'. he used an actual gto chassis (with an el camino rear clip blended in) so it would be acceptable at poci meets. cheers, ron

the caminos/rancheros are just so awesome, but I settled for a 66 f100 instead for now.

What year was the GTO? Looks like a 66.

Beautiful '68 Mike! My dad's '69 SS 396 was a blast. We were working on restoring it when my little sister took it out one day and it came home totalled. Fortunately, she was ok, though pretty shaken up.
My favorites are the '59, '66, and '69 but really any Elky is a bad mammajamma of a ride. I like the Rancheros too, but always preferred the GM take on the design. I only WISH Pontiac had built one like your dad's creation, yodedude. That's awesome!

But my wife, who grew up on a farm driving heavy trucks, calls them "wussy trucks".
Forgive her - she's never ridden in a hi-performance El Camino.

Too bad because the interior was fantastic for all original, and the body was pretty straight, minimal window rust, etc... I'd like to have an earlier or later one sometime soon. |

I signed it over to my Daughter when she got her license. It's got over 300,000 miles on it and I'm doing some work on it while the kid is in the middle east with the Air Force. |
