A screw up (pretty weird, long story) with our utility bill accounts means we haven't had one in about 6 months (or more, I'm not sure). Our bill finally came in and the electricity was a whopping £800!
But it got me thinking. I realised there was an air conditioner that's been plugged in for maybe over a year that can be turned on via remote (so it's using power when it's plugged into the wall), there's an audio amp in my room that is the same. I mean, if these devices are using 10 watts in standby, that's 240 watt/hours a day 7.2 killowatt hours a month. So a device that uses 10 watts in standby is costing us around £1 a month just to sit there! We've got a load of modems/routers in the living room sitting on 24/7 when they could have had timed plugs to at least turn them off a few hours a day. So how much of that £800 is all those devices sitting on standby or staying on 24/7? Who knows...
Researching online a little, the best thing to do is to keep on top of it, but why do I feel like I should have been regulating my electricity before cleaning my floor?
I hate electricity. Why is it so easy to waste? It's so easy to cut your bills too, but it kind of feels like I've left myself with cancer for ages before getting it treated and not I'm paying the price.
I'm moving back to my parents soon (lack of money :P), but god damn am I going to make sure I have multi plugs with switches on, and timed plugs for devices that kind of need to stay on most of the day so at least my carbon footprint/impact on their bill will be as small as possible.
Anyway, rant over! I look forward to the day when solar/wind power is more efficient... -_-;;
