Empire State Build (and other random stuff)

Sign in to disble this ad
Yes the Empire State Building, im going to build it.

Just a little puzzle version of course, all 97 pieces.
If anybody else wants to be a internet expert and throw in some facts about the real deal, please go ahead. I'm not going to cut and paste a wiki page to seem like a expert. otherwise feel free to cut and paste yourself. maybe we will find some true fans to.

here is dah puzzle picked it up at harbor freight.

Why the heck are you doing this?

well because i have this out of control HO scale Slot Car set and I figured it would spice it up some.

It all started with a set like this

and then kinda ended up taking over the whole dining room.
No more dining table...come over for dinner at my house this is what yah find.

kinda stupid i know...tacky but fun looks better with the lights out.

so to answer your question that is why im building the Empire State Building.

Didn't realize there were other modelers/hobbyists lurking around here. Just (re)started building model aircraft myself.

pics man pics post em up.

cool did some static kits and a few rubber band flyers. There was a thread not to long ago about RC planes it kinda turned into a free for all of all things hobby.

Plan on taking my mini chopter around the Empire State Building when its done. been screwing around more with toy and hobby flyers than building kits. all my buddys got little Swan helicopters we fly em between runs when we are blasting batteries in our RC cars. Indoor flight only

This was my most recent. First time I really went all out--tried new painting and detailing techniques.

South Korean KF-16C in 1/72, outfitted for SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses)

I've got three more kits waiting to be built, but can't use my airbrush in the cold so they'll have to wait until Spring.

What... no way? got to be around the cold some how. why do you have to stop...moisture? we had a water filter thing on our little compressor.

likewise your finishing details are awesome great model

blacklight dude...woooahhh trippy

I'm even blasting some Buffalo Springfield.. for the true blacklight experience

Well they were not kidding when they said Puzzle.

No instructions and just a bunch of parts...total of 8 sheets. I punched out 3 sheets and got nothing...that makes sense yet. Just a bunch of parts with numbers. you think the numbers help. But so far i get numbers like 68 and 98 and 86 and they all look similar depending how you look at the parts. I think i have something and then its not...upside down ahhhh..... puzzzzle

Thanks

I'm mainly worried about the cold itself. I work with Mr. Color paints, which are apparently notorious for being finicky with thinning. I'm afraid that the paint particles will dry before they even hit the model. I guess I could try it on some scrap and see what happens.

Ahh that makes sense.

Hobby paints confuse me now. Everything seems to have shifted towards Acrylic. I'm use to plain old enamel. That is what me and pops mainly used when i was a kid. Thinning paint to spray in a airbrush is a little finicky with all paint. Think its why guys stick to certain brands when they get a good system going.

Seems like you like Mr Color, solvent based acrylic is a new thing to me me didn't know they did that.

If i remember acrylic drys faster, helpful for some things, maybe a downside for others. Some guys insist on using a oil or enamel primer before spraying acrylic. kinda old school i think..most just mix it up and airbrush it on. Especially in small scale when you dont want heavy paint.

you should just try a sample like you said with Mr color, should be good.
might be hard to switch to another paint. But if i remember oil or enamel drys slower. Might help with your fears of drying to fast with the airbrush.

good old Testors, Model Masters, Humbrol enamel paints can be thinned with mineral spirits. The paint drys slow and drys harder.
Everyone kinda switched to Tamiya, PollyScale, Floquil, Vallejo water based because it can be thinned with water or alcohol. drys fast and is easier to clean up.

i remember getting dad extra airbrush jars for Christmas one year, so we would have dedicated jars for different paint types and thinners.

I would love to use Tamiya, but I'm still waiting for their paints to get back in stock after their "labeling issue". The main reason I use the Mr. Color paints is the color selection: I'm into the Japanese Air Self-defense Force stuff and Testors/Model Masters just don't have the colors I need for that, especially for their funky Aggressor and anniversary paint schemes.

If I get into WW2 stuff, Testors and Model Masters will be my first choice.

Ugh! Steer clear of those crap paints.

Vallejo or reaper is the way to go with model paints.

I've used Testors/Model Masters enamels without problems in the past. I thought it was just their acrylic line that was awful.

I used to use them all the time until I switched to citadel acrylics because I started *shudder* to do tabletop war gaming. The citadel brand is sold by Games-Workshop and they have a ton of colors. I switched to Vallejo a few years ago for all my modeling needs since they're much better than both.

I get my little bottles of Vallejo for about $2.75 and I generally don't use an air brush unless I'm doing dirt effects on a tank kit.

thank General Electric for your input, but when i hear the words Game Workshop i think of Gaming figures. Is that what your painting? and whatever it is your painting show us some pics.

otherwise.....more Empire

The pieces come out easy, but i took a shot here of all these little tabs that i have to spend more time with. I just cut them with a blade so they dont tear the paper print.

so skiping around between sheets instead of going in order i seem to have slightly gotten somewhere with the base

Tried to find a picture of the real deal at the same construction stage. Construction began in late January of 1930 and early planning started in 1929. Apparently it only took William F. Lamb to complete the drawings and designs in 2 weeks
try doing that now without computers...

not to far from where im at with the model added a few missing pieces for the base.
