You avoid friend requests from family when you're young. Probably actually until your married, I'd say is a good time to wait.

And if it is the case that you do actually need to add them for some reason, then I hope the obvious move is to put them on a limited profile.

My dad remembers ARPANET. He hates Facebook, abomination of the internet he calls it.

My daughter doesn't have a choice - friends with me (and some other select friends of mine), or no Facebook. I also have her passwords.

How do you put someone on a limited profile?

I'm taking it you have her passwords so you can go in and see what people are sending them in PM's?? Thats what my brother has his kids for.

You better be her top friend too or she's grounded!

I don't mess with the whole facebook or myspace, everyone has my number they can call me.
Not to mention I got in a bit of trouble with the staff about posting satirical
blogs about work. One staff member printed out all 100 blogs gave them to the CEO and demanded I be fired, well he read them, had a good laugh and told me to take them down and give an apology at the next staff meeting. I love my boss .
Ah to be young and stupid.

I also absolutely refuse to touch twitter, don't know why I guess I'm fine with RSS.

I accepted my mum's friend request, because I knew that she would use it for a week and then get bored/frustrated/forget how to use it/not see the point. I ignored my dad.

i accepted my dad's friend request....

He doesn't post that often, and if he does its usually about the anniversary of some takeover of a 12th century country that only 4 people have heard about... He is one of those guys that you can't watch a movie about history with cause he'll make statements like "the buttons on that uniform are totally wrong for that era..."

My mom has been on "Facebook" for over 20 years.
Well, not the actual Facebook you have on the internet now.

But she always announces every random thought that is on her mind to anyone in the vicinity, doesn't matter if it's about something you care or not.

i think it is too, although i like 20th century history more than anything else...
he's very useful in history class...

i remember growing up, i'd go into the attic, and he had like 6 boxes of war models that i would take out and play with...they were mostly broken anyway...all very cool though

Well, I wouldn't wanted to have Pacman as a dad when I was young.

Nah seriously.

Good thing you are doing.
Many parents are too oblivious and naive about the internets and "social networking" when it comes to their kids.

Just as you don't allow your (young) kids not to go out all night... hanging in the streets or going to bars, you should not allow your kids unlimited, unsupervised 24/7 internet acces.
It's common sense and what is expected of parents.

It's disgusting sometimes.
Around here on music television stations (dutch MTV, TMF, JIM tv) there is TV chat at night.
Many times you see texts come up: "girl 14y looks to meet someone, call **********".
In the middle of the night.

Take away the television out of the room, take away cellphones at night.
