ENGLISH... Proper usage of words (a rant)

Sign in to disble this ad
The words They're, There, and Their. I so often see so many people improperly use these words in their contexts. It's a bit annoying to me, however I do understand that this IS the internet, and such things don't really matter all that much, but ranting about it is like venting, and it makes me feel better, so bear with me.

Their is a possessive pronoun. It always describes a noun.

Note the spelling of their. It comes from the word they, so the e comes before the i.

There is an adverb meaning "that location." It is sometimes used with the verb to be as an idiom. It is spelled like here which means "this location."

They're is a contraction of they are. Note the spelling: The a from are is replaced by an apostrophe.

Examples: Their dog has fleas. (possessive of they)

I put the collar right there. (that location)

There are five prime numbers less than ten.
(with to be)

They're 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7. (contraction of they are)

Nice you got it off your chest in the wrong forum.
MISC is music related. This should be in OT.

We'll see if we can get it moved their. Or they're. Or even
there.

Misuse of "your" when what should have been typed/said was "you're" bugs me.

Their I said it; your welcome.

You have to have perfect grammar and spelling in a grammar and spelling rant or you're going to get eviscerated.

Failson size fail.

I'm really bad at that one.

I put it back to when I was 5-6 years old in school. One of the "rules" we were taught was:

" 'i' before 'e' except after 'c' "

Not trying to justify it, I just know why I keep making that mistake, and it only seems to be with their for some reason.

Needless to say, because of the holes in that saying, they aren't meant to teach it at school anymore!

I understand your frustration but it will soon be a thing of the past.

Here is part of European directive 164/EU/lang/66

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.

After years of intense negotiatons directive 164 as it shall be known has been passed.

As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling and language can be a complicated language to learn and had some room for improvement so has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English".

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.

Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.

Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.

By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as
replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v".

During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensi bl riten styl.

Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru.

Und efter ze fifz yer, it vil bekum aparunt zat spekin German vud not be abl to akumadat zis chang, so ze dezizun vas korekt to prozed vis English az ze vun Uropean langvig vor al.
