Erykah Badu Concert Banned in Malaysia

Malaysia bans Erykah Badu show over Allah body art - MSN Music News

It pays to have a bit of knowledge about the culture when you go to work in a different country. A woman showing her body and having Allah writing on that exposed body was guarranteed not to go over well in a Muslim country.

I do feel for the Malaysian music fans because they are going to miss out on some great grooves, especially when it comes to the bass!

Erykah Badu is a freakin genius artist. Her 2 last records New Amerykah part 1 & 2 are modern day classics.

IMO Erykah & D'Angelo are some of the last real torch bearers for true soul music.

Neither of those albums lasted long on my player. I just saw her live on the weekend and although the band was great, the songs didn't groove enough for me. She was better than I was expecting, but well short of Fat Freddy's Drop, who were the main drawcard for me. I had high hopes for them and I was still dumbstruck.

I've seen Fat Freddy's Drop three times. They're really good.

She's absolutely awesome, but that was a bad move on her part. One of those classic, "ya shoulda known better..." moments.

Its one of the moments where she was celebrated for what she did at home, without negative feedback from the Nation of Islam or the 5 Percenters of the God's and Earth's folks who she is linked to. And she was still invited to perform in an Islamic nation. She might have thought that the sponsors knew before she was invited. Perhaps they just remember On and On from those many years ago.

Malaysia has some of the lowest scores in terms of human rights and general freedom.. on par with Egypt, China, Sudan, Yemen, Eritrea, etc... Keep in mind, it's actually illegal to own an "UNLICENSED" printing press and self-censorship is "encouraged".. Add Malaysia to places I won't be visiting..

i would think this isn't ignorance of customs at all, but rather an artistic statement...doing what artists do, testing the boundaries

she's a smart lady
