There's similar signs in Sweden and Denmark too, but of course it's obvious it's more needed there than in NYC. Neither Sweden or Denmark have taken the euro into use, so if we in Finland want to use our euros abroad we must travel all the way to Gernamy. (Or has perhaps Estonia introduced the euro yet?) Norway don't even belong to EU so I don't blame them, but damn you Swedes and Danes! Our lives would be easier if you abandoned your old crowns and took the euro into use.

It's good that credit cards are accepted in most parts of the world though. It eliminates some of the inconveniences with different currencies.

Sounds about right, after all, it is going to turn into a world currency. Let that debate begin.

Euro is the best thing ever! When going to Germany, I can brag about the pint prices directly to my friends at home, no conversion required! When I went to Latvia last summer, who don't have the euro yet, changing cash into local latis felt very awkward.

Ha! You got that right! We've only done it to ourselves, though.

1 Euro is $1.45 USD right now

I was in the States last week and in places that still had signs up that said they only gave 60% for Canadian currency, although that was in the Detroit airport.

That's because it is our only remaining option to feel
superior to America Lite.

Hey, the book I am reading says 12.99 US and 18.99 Canadian.
That suggests a totally new possible business venture.

I remember driving from Seattle to Vancouver once and stopping in a dinner where they had a sign posting their exchange rate for Canadian dollars. It was really off and I pointed it out to the manager. He said, "What do you want me to do? Change it every day?"

duh

Most new books being published now are priced better. It is just taking a while for things to catch up because the change in value was so quick.

Are you saying prices depend on what kind of coins you have in your pocket? I remember a couple of years after the euro came along, when people were complaining about the same issue, a newspaper did some research and noticed that the euro has actually slowed inflation a bit.

Most book stores I've been to lately are selling books and magazines at the US price. I've even seen some magazines showing just one price.

Currency exchange is the biggest ripoff in the world. It is far better to use your credit card than to exchange for cash. Unfortunately, no matter where you are in the world, you need to have some cash on hand. I always dread the walk up to the exchange counter no matter what country I was in.

A decade ago when the dollar bought two looneys, I always did better using my credit card. I found that the stores that would take US dollars had an exchange rate worse than the airport counters.

My guess is that the stores in NYC remember the Canadian "deal" of a decade ago and are using it to their advantage.

Prices here have pretty much only gone up since the euro.

If you go to a bank (at least around here) you can buy another currency at the exchange rate. Isn't that hard, I do it all the time.

In the past year or two, US credit card companies have begun adding surcharges of about 3 to 4% onto transactions in foreign currencies.

I'm pretty sure thats mostly due to oil costs and not the Euro, IMHO NA economy is waaaay more dependant and affected by oil and it's cost than European countries, oil goes up, Euro gets stronger than Dollar.........

If you are in a position to do so, check out the ridiculous fuel surcharges being "past on" by everyone and their mother to consumers these days
