It looks like even the people who write news stories for Auntie Beeb aren't too hot with their English these days. Spot the clanger. They've made it easier to notice by doing it twice.

OK, I give - Watchhoo talkin' 'bout, Willis? Maybe I'm dense, but I see nothing wrong here.

That was tough to find... But it must have been pretty hard to make.

There's another error in there too, of a more minor nature, but still definitely technical rather than stylistic.

John Pearson shouldn't be a "confidante," but rather a "confidant," unless they're implying something about his femininity.

That was the first thing that lept out to me, anyway.

Bingo. That was the one I was referring to in post #5.

The other two are the flubbed tenses, I assume?

Actually, no. Why, is there something wrong there, too?

I find the title somewhat ambiguous, I mean why were they selling the Kray twins when they've been dead for years now?

By the way, the Beeb make mistakes regularly. I emailed them the other day to explain that a pay rise for Indian MP's from (something like) 20,000 rupees to 60,000 rupees was not an increase of 300% as they had printed!

I like it!

Here's a clue to what I see as the most serious error - what did John Pearson actually write?

They've corrected it now!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-11575064

There's still one possible error remaining, but you'd have to go to the auctioneers' website to check whether it's actually wrong or not.

I did, and it is.

Disgraceful!

It should be gold mine, not goldmine.

Some (but not all) dictionaries include goldmine. I checked.

Pearson was the biographer, not autobiographer.

Their "autobiographer". You tend to write an autobiography yourself.

You could argue about whether or not Ronnie "reveals" or "revealed" in his letter. Its a style thing, you could go either way with it.

TBH, I didn't even notice the autobiography thing--very few people actually write their own autobiographies, after all.

"Same here" on the first point, and "very true" on the second.
