Ever live with a crazy person?

The title says it all. And I'm talking certifiable here.

I was recently talking with an old fraternity brother and friend of mine about our college days and he mentioned our experience with Paul, a guy I'd almost forgot about.

It's a long story but I'll condense it as much as possible.

The summer after my sophomore year I was taking a business class for the first few weeks. Since most guys leave for the summer, we would rent rooms in our fraternity house for really cheap. This quiet, slightly built guy in his mid 30's shows up with his father to rent a room. He tells us that he graduated from Harvard with a degree in Asian Studies years back and is coming to Berkeley to do some graduate work. We should have known something was wrong when his dad had to show him how to use a deadbolt. But we just attributed it to him being a very introverted intellectual. You find some on every college campus.

Things started getting weird when mail started disappearing. Paul would then randomly talk to people about how he was worried about their finances, or mention some private details about their lives, which meant he was the one taking our mail. I also discovered that Harvard didn't have an Asian studies program at the time he said he attended there, so we knew something was up.

But things took a bad turn on my last day of my summer school class. My buddy Ryan told me to come upstairs as I was packing up to leave. Paul was in the back bathroom in the shower, screaming gibberish. Ryan said he'd been doing it for over and hour. I said, "good luck with that", and finished packing and left for the rest of summer.

After that Paul started stealing food, taking people's clothes that they stored in the attic for the summer, barely left his room and continued shouting gibberish in the shower for hours at a time. When they finally went to talk to him, he only opened his door enough to start throwing dishes at them. At that point I made the drive back to school to help the guys deal with the situation.

Finally, his father and the police were called to remove Paul safely. It turns out he was just released from a mental institution and after a fight with his father, stopped taking money from him and went off his meds. In his room we found six giant vaseline jars, all but one completely empty and most of the house's tupperware, which he was using to store his feces and vomit.

I seem to be a magnet for weird people and weird situations, but that summer with Paul was on another level. This post is long enough already, but trust me there were a lot more that went on during his stay. I really did feel bad for the guy, but his father never should have rented a room in our house without filling us in on the details.

Anybody else have a story to share?

Please! PLEASE!Tell me that you just put them in the Ryan's room and turned up the heat!!! BWWWAAAhahahaha!

We had a pair in our house, Craig & Greg, 2 of the filthiest humans ever to crawl out of the sewer. They used to piss in the MD 20/20 & Thunderbird bottles once they had emptied them rather than walk the 20 feet to the bathroom, and just leave them around in their room. Not crazy but disgusting. One year, to get back at them we laid a dead cat on their heater after they left for spring break....

Well, there was "Crazy Kitty", as we called her, that worked with me in the kitchen at one of the restaurants I worked in during college. Among plenty of other things, during the lunch rush one bright sunny day, she simultaneously threw a knife, spatula, cutting board, and a corned beef reuben across the kitchen because she was angry at herself for getting drunk the night before and forgetting to take her meds. After she tossed half the kitchen in the air, she ran home. Never saw her again.

Then there's the psychotic nut that works in the office here. She attends one of those cult-churches...they had a member get in a motorcycle incident and the pastor told the congregation that if they prayed enough, his leg would grow back. And if the leg didn't grow back, it would be because enough people didn't pray. So, about 30 people try to cram in the guy's hospital room so they can all touch him while they pray. And by pray I don't mean close eyes silently and whatnot, by pray I mean chant and scream to their creator...in a hospital, no less. Yeah, she's fun on a day-to-day basis...

I have a plethora of these stories, but no vaseline jars and pooh in rubbermaid. Sounds like fun.

edit: I forgot about this. That restaurant I mentioned, there was a City Ward for mental patients and they let them out everyday between 1:30 and 5:30 to walk around town. It always provided entertainment during the down times at the restaurant but the occasional "uncomfortable" guy would stroll through and send everyone scurrying to the kitchen. good times...

Big O, you have GOT to fill this thread with Paul stories.

On a side note, I've known TWO Pauls, both being severely mentally handicapped. This now makes three.

Man, as an art student in San Francisco I lived with nothing but crazy people. My favorite was a woman who seemed mild and mellow for the first few months, then she stopped taking her lithium. She stole the household's rent money and bought several live Maine lobsters (remember we were on the West Coast). She put them tail-first into just a few inches of water in a saucepan, and then turned on the stove burner. As the water started to heat up, the poor little guys started waving their bound claws around in the air and making a sort of screaming noise. When we tried to confront her about the rent money she went berserk and started chasing us with a large kitchen knife. We bailed and called the cops, and by the time they got there she had run off to who-knows where, leaving the stove on and the lobsters burning tail-first.
