Sold for $5.5 million @ Christie's from Lars Ulrich's collection in 2002.
It's so ugly I initially thought it was Lars' own work Then again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
And, as for Maki, I'm sure he'd tap that

To myself : Thus goes a line from a movie: "Bad art is tragically more beautiful than good art, because it documents human failure." | Have you guys never heard of Basquiat though? The guy was a genius in what he did. That's my wife's favorite artist. (She's an artist herself)
He could take what looks at a glance, like a meaningless piece of graffiti and inject it with depth and meaning - the more you look at it, the more it comes a live and tells a story. To me, it takes someone with a very deep mind and very complex emotion to do that. He was an amazing artist and the fact that he had passed away means there will never be another Basquiat...
If you aren't too familiar with him, there's a movie about him: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115632/
I highly recommend it

I highly recommend it | Analysis FTW, right ? That's the general perspective in the world regarding art today (and has been in the 'modern' era). I fully respect everyone who thinks that way too.
Unfortunately, for me, beautiful art is apparent: perhaps I don't get the abstraction of most of today's art, but I don't find stuff like Basquiat's to be immediately apparent as beautiful. If you say so, I believe context will lead me to think otherwise.
I just prefer the works which are, at a single glance, appealing to the eye, say, baroque art.

I like edgy stuff like that, but I also love the classic works of Rembrandt, Dali and even some of the creepier artists like Beksinski. Art is very varied, yet also personal in interpretation.
I dont know if I would call it "analysis" but I LOVE when I look at a piece of art, and it draws me in and makes me think. I love thinking! I don't think enough! When an artist makes me think about his work, I believe that he's done his job by giving me something to look at and sink into.
