Facebook ads, fluffing the numbers?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'll try to keep it simple. I created an ad for my band in South Korea. I pay only for those times when people click on the ad. The only criteria I used to target the ad was that it was for folks in South Korea only. Over the period of about 4 days the band picked up 60+ new "fans". These are all folks I've never met, which is good, but they are also people who have 100% of their info blocked from view. I'll also add that, just from their pictures and the languages they have their names in, I'm not really sure they would be interested in my rock band. I know that sounds sort of discriminatory but I sort of doubt a woman in a full burka is gonna be terribly pumped to know what my band is doing or want to come see us.

I wonder if FB is somehow fluffing the numbers to increase my charges or motivate me to expand my campaign. I'm finding FB to be a less than optimal tool for gauging gig attendance, fan base, and feedback.

I don't know if Facebook is cooking your band's numbers OP but I do know that over the past year Fb has thrice pitched friend suggestions to me from Michael Scott Erwin...

I highly doubt a multi-billion dollar company would take the time to create fake friends for your band.

You have to pay for these ads right? If so I bet its automation. They just want you to spend more money.

People don't always put pics of themselves in their FB profile pics.

You could always send a friend request to some of the suspects or message and see if you get a reply from any of them. Just pretend you're interested in finding out what they think about the band, etc

My band got a bunch of fans on our facebook page from people in the United Arab Emirates. It was strange.

You can target who sees your ad; age, gender, interests and likes... Look into that next time.

When I filtered out based on our prefered demographic, it limited us to about 5 people in all of Korea. This is because when you chose a filter, it only gives you those people WITH that filter. If people don't wish to provide that information, they won't get the ad. For example, if i want just girls to see the ad, I get nobody male or female) that has declined to provide that information. The only real criteria is that we wanted to market only to people in Korea. Seems like there are a load of African FB users living in South Korea.
