Instant personalisation

Some select partner sites may access your information to personalise your experience as soon as you arrive, but only information that's already visible to everyone. You can turn off instant personalisation for specific sites or you can turn it off completely from the Apps and Websites page. This will prevent these partners from receiving your information through instant personalisation, including what's visible to everyone.

Search

Public search on the Apps and Websites page controls whether people who enter your name in a search engine will see a preview of your Facebook Profile. It also controls whether things you've specifically chosen to share with everyone show up in searches on and off Facebook.

So does every other company you deal with, your credit card company, your bank, your insurance companies, your utilities, your cell phone, you local and national governments.

There are whole companies that house and sell personal information to whomever needs it.
Chances are if you signed it, it's in a database somewhere.
they are pretty interesting.

I was gonna say--I'm no fan of FB (don't use it), but why the heck would "information that's already visible to everyone" include one's home address and phone number? That site is obviously enormous, why in the world would a person let that info be visible to anyone who visits their profile?

I am on Facebook mainly to manage to the band page. I don't post anything more than my name and even that is private. For those that put their wives, kids, phone numbers, address etc are justing asking for identity theft or trouble.

It isn't smart.

You can opt out of the phonebook.
but you cannot permantly delete a fb account.

Pulled the plug on my fb awhile ago, didn't look back.
Privacy wasn't as a big issue as my growing deception from my «friends'» posts.
Familiarity breeds contempt.

And you can opt out of having your phone/address on FaceBook. It's never been on mine, and still is not.

I too avoid needless exposure on Facebook.

However, I posted the above link as a reminder to Fb users to vet & occasionally review their security settings in view of this latest in a series of marketing demographic amalgamation effort$/encroachments upon personal privacy by the folks at Facebook.

Have you ever posted about the way they share with Spokeo? That was the final straw for me, even though I have so far managed to avoid showing up there. I Googled a long lost friend and found both a Google Earth image of her house, and phone number on Spokeo, without even paying for the 'premium' info.

No way in hell would I put my address and phone number up on Facebook. I remember while creating my profile thinking "they're joking, right?" when I saw the fields for your address and phone number. Only my name and town are on my private, friends-only page. I don't understand why one would put such sensitive information like that up on a website like Facebook.
