Facebook 'tributes' and tribute webpages....your opinions?

There's been a recent court case in which a man has been jailed for posting vicious and sick comments regarding the Maddie McCann case (the 4yr old that disappeared in Portugal) on a tribute page, taunting the parents.

My question is this: is publicly viewable tribute pages really necessary or a suitable way to remember someone? I mean, even a few years back this sort of thing was completely unheard of and people mourned more privately. Why this sudden need for tribute pages and (IMO) tacky webpages?

Hmm...I think there recently was a thread on this topic here. If I remember correctly, the concensus was that tribute pages are tacky. I guess if it helps a person get over their loss, then it's cool. Personally, it's nothing something I'd get into.

Well I made this thread thinking that these trolls simply only exist because on the internet you can be as anonymous as you want and generally say and do what you want. These tribute sites, by being so public, are easy targets.

How many people have won the "Internet Lottery" by doing something stupid?

Example: Steven Slater (Jet Blue), Ted Williams (homeless guy), Paris Hilton (sex tape to start her never ending media blitz)...
