I happened to mention something about my pension fund arrangements on my Facebook wall a few days back (where my settings are such that status updates should only be visible to friends). Within 24 hours, I had an unsolicited text message sent to my phone from a company offering financial services directly related to my Facebook comment. This was the first time I'd received any communication at all on this particular topic.
Coincidence? I think not.

Coincidence? I think not. | recheck your settings first and foremost, any time facebook changes anything they can reset your settings and they just changed facebook last week. Look everywhere you can, they like to hide settings all over the place, it's not intuitive at all and I'm sure this is by design. I'd go ahead and change your password too.
Facebook sucks, but seems to be a necessary evil for band things for me. |

If so, it stinks.

One of the people interviewed for the article used to be a hacker and now heads his own security company. He said he comes up with passwords by blasting the keyboard with random letter, numbers and shift key hits, then he copy/pastes it to a text document before clicking the Enter button. That way, if he's in the position of someone demanding his passwords, he can honestly say "I don't know". He never keeps passwords on his computer- instead, he keeps them on a password-protected thumb drive and other password-protected places.
I was also talking with someone at a computer store and he told me that, aside from porn sites, most of the virus activity that hits people is on Facebook.

To consolidate all your personal data and information, from age to location to income to interests, into one easily accessible package and format so automated software can sift through it easier and market to specific groups.

-Mike | Nah, I knew it was paid for by advertising, of course. I always knew people who said "you can't moan about Facebook because it's free" were kidding themselves. And I'm used to (and happy to put up with) targeted advertising on the actual site. But I confess to being a bit mad that FB has apparently shared my phone number with someone without my permission, by whatever mechanism that has allowed that to happen.

-Mike | Sounds about right. Or they've updated the privacy settings and conveniently defaulted his to "Yes, allow spammers to collect all my personal information without my permission". There was probably a notification of that at some point, but I expect it would have been dismissed along with the hundreds of other uninformative pop-ups that are all over the place.

So far the worst I get is all the ads to the right of the screen (which I see now also show up in your news feed) but they are so annoying... I mostly post about motorcycles and band related things, so I get the "date punk rock girls like you" and "biker dating site" ads all the time (I'm also listed as "single"). I think FB can somehow also mine what pages you're surfing if it's open while you're browsing other sites, because I get ads related to pages I've been on.
It's creepy, but not as creepy as how many places you go that you're being watched on a camera. For simplicity's sake, lets just say everywhere.
