Now Facebook and their flunky site, Instagram, are asking for your Government Issued ID photos. They can claim whatever they want, but I feel it is just part of their milking every bit of potentially profitable personal information from their users.

FB is FAR too intrusive now. They track everything about you - what you do, what you like to do, all your friends, yours and your friends' likes to build profiles to sell, and leave the door open to total identity theft by hackers.

The day when Facebook asks me to upload my drivers license is the day I close my account. In my opinion that's just plain going too far, and I don't need them that badly.

I agree that FB is far too intrusive, but I don't think they steal anything. If people want to voluntarily give away whatever information about themselves, that's up to them.

I'm as minimal a facebook user as someone can be while still having an account. I'm not even that worried about identity theft, I just don't want to live in a world where everything I come across is only in front of me because an algorithm has assessed my behavior and wants to sell me something.

It seems they are making it a requirement in certain cases.

FIRST they want to sell your personal photos for THEIR profit only, and now they want your very personal ID photos. S***W you, FaceBook.

I wouldn't say they are stealing it, they are asking for it for account verification on some high subscription accounts.

If they ask for it, you don't have to give them it, you can just tell them to swivel on it.

I have to laugh at the paranoia of social media sites stealing our most valuable info. Don't like it...DON'T USE THEM!!! I really don't care if someone knows what I like to buy because it's not changing. I'm a creature of habit. I really wonder where this massive flock of sheep is supposedly being lead by the social network death shepherd. Sure, don't scan and send your license out of common sense, but someone tagged your face on a website on which you spend hours while downloading data on their servers....and then you complain at the "free" service? Have you ever heard that line about when something sounds too good to be true?

I could jump up and down all day complaining, but my personal buying information is out there, golly gee whiz. You want to try and sell me on exfoliating Acai berry probiotic yogurt facial rubs? Have at it sparky, I'm still using Dial.

If talkbass demands my social sec # to log on tomorrow, I'm off to redditt.

This is why I'm glad I made my Google+ account only partially accurate. Google now has it connected with every other social media site I use that they own, and all the info I originally put on G+ is now on Youtube and several other sites. Again, I'm glad I didn't use my full name or anything like they were heavily suggesting that I should.

I'm pretty careful about giving info out over the internet. I don't care about sites directing adds at me because they know the sites I've visited - I never buy anything over the internet anyway, so they can advertise all they like. If Facebook tell me I have to give them a photo, I'll close the account - it's not very important. It's only good for getting in touch with old friends (30 year high school reunion this year, so I was just told through Facebook)

I'm sure there are some folks getting extremely annoyed about the remote possibility that an occasional photo gets 'stolen' but have no hesitation about stealing an artist's music.

They are asking suspect accounts for ID's but not requiring them to join. They really want to though because it means they can charge higher ad rates to reach verified demographic bios.

Some here have no idea how much they know about you. More than your family. Probably more than your wife. It isn't just Facebook, every click you make is cataloged for someones marketing plans.

Hopefully we don't have a future where health insurers can see all your 20 year old party posts and jack your rates up in your 50s. Because that information is already at their fingertips and will still be 30 years from now.

If you don't care, great! But prove it. Put your money where your mouth is and post your internet history for us.

Here's another that isn't talked about yet but will be.

Intelligent people can sometimes pick up on very personal facts about you based on the ads that show up following an email from you. Especially Gmail. It isn't hard to notice these ads and put two and two together. They are telegraphing what other people are talking about in private conversations. They already know the relationship between you two and figure you might like or need the same things.

It isn't paranoia. I do internet marketing and social media for a few influential people, it is my job to know this.

If you don't give a rats *** about your private life leaking around the world, then tell them all they want to know! But it is pretty lame to mock others that do care and want to keep a private life that isn't cataloged for others to buy and sell.

Trust me, they have some real reasons to feel concerned.
