Fall Dutch Government Makes World Headlines

Sign in to disble this ad
Last night around 4:00 am local time the Dutch government fell because they couldn't agree on matters considering Afghanistan. News links:

CNN: http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/eu...net/index.html
BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8525742.stm
The Independent: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/wo...n-1905407.html
NY Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/20/wo...html?ref=world

etc. etc.

So now it leaves me 3 months to decide what party I should vote for.

Wow, a government falling is no small matter. I'm curious to see what the EU's response will be over the next week or so.

Uhhmm... this is news?

Each Dutch government falls at least once. This is the second time for government Balkenende already.
It's pretty usual this happens, nothing shocking.
It's the same here in Belgium.

I could explain why and give my opinion on this...
but that would be political and is not allowed.
As much as this thread is about politics and probably not allowed on TB.

Sorry Daniel.

Sorry Daniel.
Actually, it's the 4th cabinet of Balkenende that falls. But this time it's because of international reasons, which is a first.

4th already. I don't follow it that intensively over there.

I just hope all the morons that are saying they're gonna vote PVV are actually gonna do so. LPF all over again, we'll have another election in a year and maybe Wilders will finally step out of the limelight

Year? First coalition with LPF lasted 3 months.

Yeah but I'm not expecting Wilders to get murdered within the next couple of months so the PVV will still have their leader after the election.

*sigh* sensationalist journalism. They really shouldn't announce that the Dutch government "fell", it makes it sound like the entire democratic system failed, the country was plunged into lawlessness and a despotic tyrant is stepping in to power. All that happened were that some of the cabinet members resigned...

But it sounds like that because Americans have no cabinet. And because explaining how the Dutch system works is way harder than saying the government fell they do just that. Besides, the resigning of an entire party is a) very different to "some cabinet members resigning" and b) not something to be easy discarded since we now have no means of making ANY decisions on matters economical, law, social security, healthcare, etc. etc.

We have a cabinet, but in a different sense of the word. The cabinet serves at the pleasure of the president here.

Very different here, we don't even have a president, only Prime Minister.

There will be no response.
Europ as a political entity is pretty much dead, killed by trade markets who want to keep the economical benefits of the union without being controlled by an unified European governement.
