I've got 5 dead Jack Pines I've been looking to get cut down.
Oops, make that 4.

Sadly, if one of the two behind it go - they aren't likely to miss the house.

I'm more of a Stihl man myself even though I'm a Scandinavian .
Obviously the laws vary from country to country, and between insurance companies, but usually failing to trim/cut down dead or damaged trees voids your insurance.
During this last summer we've had some pretty bad storms over here. After one such storm my GF recieved a phone call from her former neighbour, who told us that a large birch had fallen over her fathers house. Fortunately the fire brigade came to remove the trunk from the roof and we were told that there was no serious damage. Needless to say we hurried to the scene the next day to cut and remove the trunk.
No serious damage was indeed the result. The tree had snapped roughly 5 meters from the ground, as only about 10% of the wood on one side on that spot wasn't rotted. It's amazing how little had kept that much weight over the years, and the heavy snow winter we just had made it more amazing. There was NO indication that the tree was literally almost cut in half BTW.
Because of that, I did fell a birch that looked a bit bad on our new yard. Glad I did, wasn't in such a great shape either.
Trees are great on ones yard. When they're in an upright position .
Regards

You might want to also rent one of these .
If the other trees are in really bad shape you might not want to put any weight on them. |

Just kidding. Or am I? I liked that the Husqvarna had the chain brake react to kickback. Sure, you don't really need it, but it gives you a warm fuzzy. I also found them lighter than a comparable Stihl.... makes a big difference after 8 hours. |

It put a hole in their roof and caused about $4000 worth of damage to their house. Last year they had one crash down on their deck and do some damage there. Trees suck!

They're too close to power lines/houses/the road for that...
They'll have to come in with a bucket truck and and drop it pieces at a time/top them to get them down without hitting anything.

. | Well if they're close to power lines the utility may take care of it...at least the ones that are threatening the power lines. Don't hurt to ask...
We had an ice storm a few years back and the electric company cut the limbs that threatened the lines to my house (in my yard)

Think real hard before starting on each tree, where & how to cut, where it will fall, etc.
Otherwise chaos & disaster of epic proportions can ensue. And I don't want to read about somebody I know on the Darwin Awards site.
Take care,
edg
PS: Seriously, be careful.

PS: Seriously, be careful. | You don't have to tell me - I've cut down lots of trees.
The fact that I'm aware of all the things that can go wrong is exactly why I won't personally cut down trees that close to my house... as much as I hate to pay, if they drop a tree on my house they're insured.

I cut wood for my great-uncle to have a bonfire and used his old chainsaw, it was smaller than the Stihl I normally use and much much heavier. |

This wasn't the common brake that was activated with your hand, but was activated by the blade. And I haven't done any serious cutting in decades. I don't even own a chainsaw any more | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
