Family Joke Gift Traditions

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,

When my family gets together for holidays or birthdays we often trade back and forth gag gifts passed off as good ones. For example, I got a t-shirt for Christmas that my uncle received from my mom for his birthday. She gave it as a serious gift, but the shirt has a mustang logo and says ride the pony. It became a big joke and my uncle will not wear it. Well now it's mine to wear or regift.

One year I received a 'wet-stopper' that shocks you when you wet the bed. I didn't get to keep it though - the giver took it back to rewrap for someone else! Other gifts include knick-nacks found around the room and dropped into gift bags, fake poo, and more 'inside joke' t-shirts.

Anyone else have some funny traditions like this?

my family(aunts, uncles, cousins) does a dirty santa gift exchange. ive seen 9v batteries be the best gift available but usually there is some pretty random stuff in the mix.

Not with my family, but my group of friends has a gift exchange every year and the main goal is to make people laugh. It is a $5 limit, so we have to be creative. One year the highlight was catnip taped to a jug of antifreeze. This year the best gift was a rented movie.

We always buy my Mom something COMPLETELY tacky.

Cause she hates tacky stuff.

Several years ago, I had a group of friends that would do this. We would draw numbers that would match a number on the gifts. One year I ended up with a dozen of those prickly things that fall from sweetgum trees in an egg carton labelled "Porcupine Eggs"!

hahaha.... my aunt spent months talking about maybe bringing up a bottle of Dom Perignon for Christmas when they came to visit... but my parents absolutely refused all the same.

when she showed up, she was clutching a wrapped bottle. my mum spent the days leading up to christmas having a go at my aunt for spending all that money on something.

it got to christmas day, and my mum unwrapped it only to find it was a bottle of washing up liquid wrapped cleverly

Its just me who does the joke presents.. on my sister. Ive wrapped for her over the years:
-Table
-Chair
-Computer box
-a selection of her own posessions
-a bread roll
-yoghut pot
-apple core
-screwed up piece of paper
plus many many more

Shes too old to let it bother her but the first year I wrapped up a chair and it was the biggest present of the family. She was so excited.. and then so so disappointed.

There is a charity shop next door to my house and I was going to buy my older sister a hideous handbag from there and my mother a golden jacket but left it too late and they closed.
