There used to be a seedy little bar on the wrong side of the tracks where you could buy anything. I mean anything. The chalupas at that place made the metal detectors seem worthwhile.

Cimichangas are my go-to dish when dining in a new Mexican restaurant
Unfortunately, despite the fact that Mexican restaurants are plentifull around here, very few are good

I'm also a fan of good chiles rellenos. Some of my favorite are at Matt's El Rancho in Austin. I always like to see the chef's specials at higher-end mexican restaurants too.
In Waco we have a mexican seafood restaurant called Siete Mares that is awesome. Everything is good there. One of my favorites is a coconut crusted tilapia with jalapeno jelly.

Carnitas are really good as well.
I guess I'm spoiled knowing several Hispanic families around here. I used to work with several of them and we all shared what we brought for lunch. I don't know/remember what most of it was called, but their leftovers usually beat the hell out of mine. I guess it was the same for them too, shepard's pie seemed to be their favorite, or anything that was grilled.

It's a sauce that's usually put on chicken or fish. Wikipedia says:
"...Mole poblano is prepared with dried chili peppers (commonly ancho, pasilla, mulato and chipotle), ground nuts and/or seeds (almonds, indigenous peanuts, and/or sesame seeds), spices, Mexican chocolate (cacao ground with sugar and cinnamon and occasionally nuts), salt, and a variety of other ingredients including charred avocado leaves, onions, banana and garlic. Dried seasonings such as ground oregano are also used. In order to provide a rich thickness to the sauce, crushed toasted tortillas, bread crumbs or crackers are added to the mix."
It's the bomb. If you've never had it, try it. |

So, yeah. I like Chimichangas just fine too, but they race through me like a bullet train (as if the burrito doesn't already)
But a huge bowl of chili (hot as f*** if you don't mind) is a blessed thing.

Had them in Baja. Still dream of them sometimes.

Although I went to this really good Mexican joint in San Antonio at the suggestion of another TB'er and I got this cheese dish that came to my plate on fire. I don't remember what it was called, but I know it was good. Hopefully Dave M. comes along and reminds me what it was he told me to order.
