Favourite European City?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am lucky enough to have seen a little bit of Europe over the years and have great memories from many great places : Florence, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Barcelona, Rome, Athens, Paris, Prague, Brussels, Reykjavik, Stockholm and Helsinki are all ticked off.

This was all in the B.C. Days (before children), but now they are old enough to be dragged around museums and shops without whining and we are looking at a long weekend in Feb for another visit.

However, tempting as it is to play safe, we fancy trying somewhere different. Anyone been anywhere that blew them away that they would recommend?

My top two: Prague and Krakow.
I love the "ancient" aspect of both. Lots of history and a very real aesthetic of "times long past".
Take a walk a few blocks and you're back into the 21st century. Granted, most big cities in EU are kind of like that but these two resonate with me for some reason.

+1 to Krakow. I was there a few years ago for a college course and just loved it.

It's hard to pick a favorite, but Vienna would have to be near the top of my list. Close behind: Heidelberg, Mechelen, and London, too. I wouldn't pass up opportunities to see Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Berlin, Hannover, or Magdeburg again, either.

Come to Edinburgh, it rains a lot but we have a castle on a volcano.

I wouldn't call it a "great city" - it's too small for that - but I really like Lausanne in Switzerland.

Check out Spain, my favorite country in Europe:
Barcelona, Alicante, Seville...
Cheaper than France, Germany, Italy and Scandinavia.
I hate the cold...

I want to go to Auschwitz, but I don't think my kids would appreciate what it stands for just yet. I know it will upset me terribly, but I think it's just one of those places I need to visit.

Eastern Europe or Scandinavia looking favourite at the moment. St.Petersberg has a strange allure...

Haha. I'm near Manchester and I cross the border a few times a year when we head to the lakes. Always starts to bucket down once you pass Carlisle. But yes, Edinburgh a wonderful place.

I lived near Majdanek for a while. It's a brutal thing.... but I think that everyone should go to one of those such places at least once in their life.

Oh yeah, Antwerp, too! I got to see a small part of it at night. I would gladly go back to explore some more.

I only got a taste of Europe in high school. We went to Paris, Venice, Florence, and Rome. Out of what I saw, Paris was my favorite (speaking French may have helped).

I'd love to go to Holland.

Paris is great, too bad it's so criminally expensive to live there.

I really like Paris, very nice city.
I work in Brussels and the more time I spend there, the more I like it.

There are lots of great cities in Europe, each one great for different reasons. One city I neve tire of is Paris. It's nice living an hour away making day trips fun.

I can't narrow it down to just one. I'd have to include Amsterdam, Antwerp, and Dublin.

Yeah. Amsterdam the most frequently visited. Twice a year for about six years. Not been since 2004.
