The "feeling that you're being watched" what's up with that?

Welcome to my first - "I'm stuck in work on good friday and it's slow as heck here so I'm pulling a thread out of my butt for my own personal entertainment" thread of the day.

Have you ever been driving somewhere, let's say on a somewhat busy street only to look over at someone walking on the side of the road only to have them turn around and look directly at you?
Or been in a bus or train, and you glance at the back of someone's head for whatever reason and they turn around and look right at you?
If a sixth sense doesn't exist then how does stuff like that happen?

It just happened to me now. I'm sitting here working, and I happen to glance out the window at someone walking on the sidewalk outside... she swivels her head and is looking in my direction as though she knew someone was watching her, but didn't know where from. Yet, I know for a fact that you cannot see into my house from the sidewalk outside. So...what's up wit dat?
For that matter, have you ever had the feeling of being watched only to somehow instinctively turn around and lock eyes with a person who was looking at you?

Dunno. Maybe it's the cameras on every corner and all along
the highway.

Ever wonder who watches all the stuff those cameras record?
The Video and Audio Surveillance Administration employees?

Ever wonder how much they make? Kind of like TSA peeps.

Ever wonder if they can see you through your webcam, even
if its not on? That's why I never hooked one up.

That new phone you got not only has GPS on you, but it can
record you even when it's been hung up. You knew that, right?

I had this conversation with my roommate the other day and he brought up a very good point that I think answers the question. Peripheral vision.

We don't realize it but we can see almost directly to our sides.

Also the reflexes respond quicker to things in our peripherals. See a member of another tribe/a lion/rhino/pack of wild dogs watching you (or in this case a prying co-worker), instinctively you will turn to face it before you even realize you saw it.

The number of times someone is watching "one" is DIRECTLY proportional (in fact... d@mn neart equal) to the number of times one's finger is in his/her nose.
